1996-7.
the new generation of P cars had just come out and made the air cooled era look so last decade.
The City wide-boys who jacked up the prices to £100k during early 90's were licking their wounds.
I had enjoyed the car for a long time. It needed 6 month servicing and the only specialist I trusted was a 90 minute drive away.
I wanted an easier life.

ah well, one of (but not) the worst financial mistake during my life time.

So, originally delivered to Switzerland (C10 Equipment), M471 Sport ('lwt'), GP White/Blue.

No evident race provenance, but if the mileage and history are verifiable then it would be a desirable example. However, it would appear that the estimates above are well adrift of current pricing.
Out of interest whats current pricing?
I believe this example has a guide price around £500,000. Apparently, two similar M471 2.7 RS 'lightweights' recently sold for US$800,000+.

That's a big jump in recent pricing and indicates just how extreme markets have risen this year. However, they are fairly rare, they are historically important, genuine 'blue chip' classics, sought after by global collectors.

I used to have four 2.7RS's (all M472 touring rather than lightweights)- I thought they were good cars but certainly not the best 911's I've ever owned. ( The best pre-impact 911 I owned was an ex R-Gruppe car which had a 2.7 engine, rose jointed suspension etc - a bit of a hot rod and fantastic to drive)

I sold my last 2.7 RS in 2008 for around £145k thinking I'd hit the top of the market - it's now up for sale for around £320K but with the benefit of hindsight I've have bought a different lottery ticket every week for the last fifteen years as well !

The impression I get is the more that's written about them the more they are held in adulation and the story/hype rolls on and grows with every article published, so in the end the legendary status grows almost on its own ( only my opinion) Additionally I can't recall being particularly comfortable driving it or leaving it anywhere just in case someone pinched it or hit it - overall I certainly enjoy the lesser value 911's I own now, more, for a whole host of reasons.

Just my opinion for what it's worth !

Interesting post thanks for that, what made it uncomfortable to drive? Value?

They are nice cars and having driven a generous pal's version a couple of times, they do feel special but not 300 grand special. Spend 50 - 80 grand on a lovely early car then invest the rest in your optional lifestyle choices of racing, drinking and / or whoring

Its hard to apply any sort of logic to the values, I guess most of the collectors are ticking boxes and a 'copy' wouldn't quite cut it.

Whats a 250GTO 'worth' now? £10m? £20m? Even as a total car nut, I find that pretty disgusting but hey, some people pay more than that for a bit of old paint on a canvas! And to some, its still small change.

These people live in a different world where only the best of the best will ever be enough.

A car doesn't get better because its price goes up, it's the same car. (See 964RS for evidence of this). These are investments now, not just driving tools. You can get cheaper/better driving thrills elsewhere.

IMO a 2.7RS is still a pretty damn cheap car when you consider where it sits in the pantheon of all time great historical cars, and especially compared to ludicrously expensive Ferraris - you'd be lucky to find a 250GTO for under £20M now, I'd wager if you asked £30M for a good one you'd have people queuing up.

Makes the price of the 2.7RS just a rounding error to proper collectors.

Agree with that, but then I would do. Blame the HK market and their ludicrous import duties for right hookers. I've had some biblical offers.

I now regret selling mine. Really only a 2.4E with decals, blue centred 15" Fuchs and a GRP engine cover, but probably now worth over £20,000 and a very passable pastiche.

At the time no one wanted pre-IB cars and I struggled to sell it £7,500 (bought it for £4,750 though...).

Second that but out of loyalty to my car would sub 993GT2 for standard 993. You can have too much of a good thing. And bring in 908/3 for the 911R. So:

356 Abarth Carrera
550
904/6
917
908/3
911ST
2.7RS LWT
2.8RSR
930 3L

mein gott. I've spent a bit of time in one of these and its a fabulous car but £500k. I'd love one but at that money I'd rather buy a cheaper 996 GT3 RS or 997 GT3 RS and have a car with modern brakes and gearbox. £500k the world has gone upside down

Apologies - yes I meant uncomfortable to drive from the point of view of its value in case anything happened to it . I must admit I probably get as much if not more enjoyment from using my "tuned" 911 T or my 3.2 Carrera !
