The air cooled 911 . I swear I have actually tried not to like them .
I've tried everything , everything . From modern HyperCars to classics from other manufacturers . Nothing comes close . Even Porsches of modern times (apart from the Carrera gt) hold no LONG TERM interest and are a shadow a pastiche of the real deal . Sure I fall in love with others but the novelty wears off . The grass ISN'T greener and I always creep home with my tail between my legs .
I love the way they feel , sound and above all else drive . I love the fact that I can fix it enough to get home ( stupid old ME !) , that it's still fast enough , that's it gets positive reactions ( no shaking hand motions directed at an old 911) and yet they are still strong and comfortable enough for daily use . They fit on real roads , they ride on real roads , they are fun at sane speeds on real roads and in all conditions yet they can still hold their own on a track even today . There is one for every mood , for every purpose , for every climate and even every budget . I had an epiphany tonight , I completely and utterly adore them all ; they are the best cars ever made .

I admit it , I Kneel before Zod

Oh yes... they're.... fantastic....

If fantastic is:

Headlights do nothing
Interior layout for anything you need could literally be anywhere - heating controls on dash and behind the gear lever?!
Sitting sideways
2nd gear doesn't work until it's warmed up
Condensation? More like it's raining inside
Pondering - Is that rust or mud in this weather? Oh no, that's right, you only use it April - Sept :-)
Being overtaken by diesels while in a Porsche
Window wipers packing up
Interior smells aren't good, petrol smells I agree are fantastic
Worst stereo available to humanity and now that I've found the heating controls, what do they actually do? not much..

Still, everybody looks while you drive past if you like that kind of thing :-)

AND people winge about an £8k engine rebuild charge on a 996, which will keep it sweet for life. 911 SC, 3.2, 930, 964 will easily zap that in a couple of years if you use the thing on new body panels, rust removal, engine top end rebuilds and suspension components

What's your Cayman made of?

And, aren't the 964 and 993 front and rear bumpers plastic? About the same difference then

You don't buy into evolution then

More rigid body shell, faster, more ergonomic and generally better in every way

been there done it .. yes technically better in nearly all ways ( although my old 996 turbo gave me terrible back ache) .... but ultimately not as much fun , not as enjoyable to drive etc etc . If you get away from the 'mines bigger / better than yours' camp and start looking at what you actually enjoy in a drive, then you'll find the right car to suit, wether that be water or air ... or even non porsche !

Personally, I keep coming back to LHD aircooled Porsche as I enjoy everything about them ( LHD , because I can't get on with the RHD driving position , made worse by the later sport seatsfixing your arse in position ) , where as the watercooled stuff just doesn't give me the same feelings.

The bonnet is, I thought the doors were also or is that only the turbo? Either way the bumpers are plastic and so are they on the 964 and 993. The rest of the car is steel as per always.

Sometimes it's good to be sitting sideways.

In the rain, in october. I wasn't listening to the wireless.

Stainless steel? Yuck, like a Delorean?

The 997 is the pinnacle of everything ;-)

I tell you what, I much prefer driving the 997 to a 3.0 SC

I love my 3.2 and wouldn't swap it for all the tea in China, but the headlights and "heater" are indeed laughable. That 993 at 911virgin is a lovely thing indeed.

Just had a look at 911 Virgin's website. I'm appalled to say they have a Panny Diesel for sale. What is the world coming to? biggrin

Good thing we all like different things - that car in that colour scheme is a low point in 911 history for me. And I used to have one (albeit polar silver). But I share your love of base models unadorned with spoilers etc. Like this - much missed.

Yes that does look lovely. Funny how impact bumper cars look so good now and they didn't 2 years ago.

Did around 3000 miles after nut and bolt restoration. It is a 1970 2.2s. Fantastic to drive - so light. 3.2 was too heavy feeling for me (the helm). Squirejo bought the 2.2s off me - wish I had never sold it.
