Before my 996 I had a Maserati 3200GT with an Auto box. Now I know the Masser is more a GT than a sportscar but I still felt I was missing out on something, hence I got a manual 996.

Like the other chap said though it's horses for courses....the C4S Cabrio with Tip is a completely different car to a manual C2 - not necessarily worse though, just different.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise you had to drive at maximum speed, and be a track expert to own a porsche I've had my tip since March and I love it. I'm a lazy bugger by nature, and the ability to switch to "manual" when I want a bit of a blast suits me just fine. I'm not and probably never will be a major speed freak, nor the next Michael Shoe maker, does that mean I shouldn't have bought a Porsche ?? I think not.... as had been said before, that's why there's so many variants...

The 911 should NEVER have been offered as a Tiptronc. (ie., AUTO)

Its anathema to the finest sports car in the real world.

If Porsche had offered a more sophisticated electronic gearbox like the Ferrari F1, then fair enough.
Also, didn't Porsche develop the original DSG for racing, still not offered in road cars.

Not good enough Porsche

This is just the kind of nonsense which annoys me about this otherwise fantastic forum.

You, sir, I take it, don't have to suffer a 90 minute slog through London traffic every morning. Neither do you have a disability which means you can't drive a manual (neither do I, but think about it...)

You are doubtless a top chap (although doubtless in posession of a beard...) but this kind of attitude is inexcusable. I presume you also violently disagree with CDs and believe that vinyl is king, and that anyone who buys a hifi without a high end turntable shouldn't be allowed to even have the choice.

I CHOSE a tiptronic, and whilst I would prefer a manual car for the 5% of the time I drive on open roads with no traffic, I compromised becuase it suits my life.

I presume you would also have Porsche remove airbags, aircon, PSEs, ABS, PSM etc as they detract from what you perceive to be the "purity" of the 911. While we're at it let's all drive on crossply tyres and not have any heaters or decent headlamps.

This argument is a waste of oxygen, to be honest.

I love my 911, it fits me like a glove, and I don't give a toss what anyone thinks.

First 45 minutes town in D, then as soon as I am on the A4 it's into M to stretch her legs and let her breathe!!

I picked mine up from Wimbledon... D made sense, but as soon as she cleared London she went into M and has pretty much remained there all the time.

I'm one of the 'dodgy knee, thank god they make a tip version' brigade.

Could Tip V Manual be the new TT v GT3

It is could to read that I am not alone in thinking the tip suites my needs.

If any future buyers are reading this , try before you buy, do not dismiss the tip box due to something you read on a forum, it seems there are more happy tip drivers out htere than i thought..

Long live the Tiptronic box, you never know porsche might grace the GT3 with one oneday

Steady on old Boy, I'd never go onto a forum and criticize other perole's choice of car. (unless someone actually invited an opinion)
The reason why I feel so vitriolic about this topic is because I OWN A TIPTRONIC. Therefore, in this instance, I feel justified in my personal opinion!
And, as I've stated its is fundamentally flawed, and way below the level of engineering that Porsche achieve in the rest of the 911.
If you don't believe me try a Jaguar XK, or a 7 speed MB auto, or a VAG DSG (though it pains me to admit it).

For the record, I frequently drive in and out of central London (hence the compromise choice initially, please read the post).

Oh, and I don't have a beard.......... the wife does though

Porsche haven't bothered trying to redesign the tiptronic box for one simple reason... Volkswagen.

As you may have seen, Porsche recently acquired more equity in VW to effectively block any hostile takeover attempts. Apart from being a nice financial investment, it also protects their various technology sharing collaborations...(Touareg and Cayenne, etc)

This means that the DSG box will soon be seen on 911s (apparently could be as soon as next year). Why spend millions on development, etc when you can 'borrow' the DSG.

Very much like Lambo with Audi, expect to see more standard components/technology from VW in the next generation Porsches.. In my opinion, no bad thing.

The Tiptronic box may be the most outdated thing on a 997 but its still a nice piece of kit in manual mode once you get used to it. No idea of the actual sales split but I bet the percentage of Tips vs. Manuals is quite high... We can't all be wrong..!!

Totally, plus it WORKS!

Ferrari/Lambo boxes are great fun, but you try buying a new clutch once a year.

Porsche (and Aston) have it right.

lol, this is some quality trolling.

If I was stuck in London traffic everyday, I'd want an automatic too.
