Steve, that is a serious build.

Perhaps you could start a build thread on here?

Will do. As soon as the first pics start coming through, i'll open up a thread.
And re the serious build comment. As a wise man once said, " if you're going to get wet, you may as well go swimming!!" Well, something like that.

I shall also be taking this opportunity to be fitting electric power steering, probably form the Corsa, as this is a very popular addition to the modern vintage rally cars.
Hello matey, hope all's well with you?

Seems a long time ago since those pints when you were telling me all about the project - great to see the pics, lovely looking build there wink

W.r.t. the power steering, when you're ready give me a shout, my best mate is making these systems up for the Mk2 Escorts and such like, using the Corsa electronics as you mention - loads of the guys on the Turbosports forum have now fitted his setup to their Mk1/Mk2/Other...

Hi Spencer,

Good to hear from you. Hope all is well your end. Still got the '3??
Interesting about the steering gear. What sort of ££ do you think? TBH, Prepfab are doing me a stonking deal on the Corsa system, as they are doing so much else. And considering the amount of custom fab work involved, i might stick with them to supply and fit. Then all responsibility rests with them.

keep well,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Yeah, still got the '3 - after our little (cough) "convoy" up the M20 last time, decided to go for an equally fruity pair of silencers (albeit CarGraphic, not Manthey). If it wasnt for a broken collarbone, they'd be on the car by now!

To save the integrity of the thread, I'll email you some details re above...

ho-ho!...no, I'm now one of the ONS's statistics - fell down all-but-three stairs at home - had a John Cleese comedy run down most of them, then landed square on my right shoulder. Hearing a bone snap isn't an experience I want to repeat, and am very much looking forward to a comfortable nights sleep!

Am thinking of doing this to my mazda race car to save weight. Makes no financial sense but will improve the quality of the race car build no end! Do you have any idea on what weight you will save on the 924 by dipping it?

You could lose around 30kg in underseal alone.

Spencer,
That is genius!!!

Malcolm, as far as weight saving goes, it can be fairly substantial. If you are building a dedicated race car, dipping will remove aall paint and primer, all factory galvanising, and all underseal. Added together, this comes to a fair bit, maybe as much as 30-50kgs, especially in modern cars. With the galvanising removed, it will be easier to seam weld, and by not having it e-coated, you save again on weight. Howevr, it also makes the actual job of building the car much nicer. Ever sat in a car with a can of paint stripper.thinners taking out the crap? Trust me, noit one of life's highlights. So for ease alone it's a no brainer. Then when you start building, everything is nice & clean, and ready to go.

I was budgeting on about 20kg weight saving so anything over this is bonus time! I'll take it! I managed to find an unused shell to start my project on so really clean already but weight is allergy thing for me, just got to get rid of it sensibly. Saves a fortune in high horsepower engine costs and gives reliability as a result!

I presume the acid dip process can also strip off epoxy coatings? Been toying with the idea of either rebuilding the Westfield onto a brand new chassis, made using thinner-walled tubing, or maybe just strip it down, modify it for additional cross braces, then dip it to remove the coating...then re-powder coat it.

Is there any advantage to getting it eCoated then powder coated? I know it's dependant upon the quality of the powder coating, but not unusual to see corrosion bubbling underneath the coating after a number of years - perhaps this may prevent it?
