I read quite a lot. I don't know what it is about the Porsche forum but it's constant justification of one model and derision of the others. Normally starts with air cooled vs 'vanilla' 996 etc

And then the 'enthusiast' credentials get rolled out as if to claim some superior level of authority. It's hilarious and a little sad all at the same time. You really don't see this level of judging and bickering on other forums.

2 generic bullst arguments :
Air cooled owners always talk about the cars appreciating in value - sound more like investors than passionate drivers
Water cooled cars are too competent, like an Audi with a baged it doesn't deserve - rep mobiles, not cars for passionate drivers.
It's all bullst - makes me wonder if none porsche owners look at these forums and laugh at what a bunch of old bhes we look.

I'm a car and bike entusiast, genuinely not too interested in how others perceive my choices in cars and bikes, I buy them because I'll enjoy them. Cars (and bikes) can be interesting and stimulating in different ways. I like all 911s for slightly different reasons.

Cayennes are actually pretty good off roaders and very good tow vehicles. I have driven the wheels off mine, with at least 15,000 miles under tow..
Offroading, snow, dessert, the lot. I do not think it makes me less of a car enthusiast. It just does things my other cars can't do...

Cmoose, the day will certainly come when the 911 is forced down the hybrid or full electic route, I imagine it will still be one of the more engaging cars of that era but I will probably look back at the 6 cylinder cars fondly. When it gets to the Google car scenario, I don't know, we have to see what that future looks like.

And yes I have favourites (930, 997 turbo, 996 gt3) but I know this is a simple mater of taste and it doesn't make me have to ridicule the rest (or anyone with differing taste). I'm not accusing you of doing this, but it's t's the constant under tone of Porsche discussions.

We have tried to avoid semantics - but maybe we all have different deffenitions of 'enthusiast'. Perhaps the reality is that some are enthusiasts for a very specific 911, others are enthusiasts for exciting cars and bikes which includes 911s. You'd hope there was enough common ground for these groups to not be constantly at each other.

In my view each iteration of the 911 was of its time. In the future there will be hybrids and electric versions that will, I trust, wow that incoming generations the way past 911's wowed the generation of their day. And somehow, Porsche will always maintain that 911 thread of DNA. There will be 'car nuts' and 'enthusiasts' raving over the latest technological leap just as the word 'turbo' seized the world's imagination at one time.

Compelling piece of market research there. Tell us more? Did you travel the world burdened by this vast existentialist question? Do you live in a small village somewhere? Hard to gauge the significance o this finding of yours

School boy error Mario! Fancy bringing a balanced and none judgmental opinion to the porsche forum!

There really is something worryingly needy about the desperation to prove the credentials of one model (or ownership group) over another. You rarely see this kind of crap on other marque forums.

Ugliest 911 - nope, every one has something to love both aesthetically and dynamically. Never looked at one (unless it's a hideous modification) and thought it ugly.

However, I just can't be enough of an enthusiast to have a credible opinion.
Unfortunately you have not (and I don't blame you) properly read, if at all, the posts that started all of this off, and the reasoning behind them. The condensed version goes something like "996s must be beautiful because they sold lots of them - more than 993s" and my response to that was "there were plenty of reasons other than beauty as to why the 996 was a commercial success" with Cayennes coming into the story obliquely.

Setu Mitu whatever seemed to have been prodded by a branding iron at that suggestion, referring to others opinions as waffle etc, and we are all having some good sport at his expense.

That wasn't what I said but sure, why let the truth get in the way of a good story. Carry on.

Any 996 in all reality, but 996RS takes it to another level.

To be fair that looks amazing..i suggest if you think otherwise a new labrador is required smile
All subjective Kayc....especially if you own one wink
Love the cars but I honesty don't get this aesthetically speaking. Headlights, stance and narrow hips all not Porsches best IM personal O
997 is a better shape all day long and especially in GT3 and RS form.

The Turbo is the least good looking 997 though with slightly awkward stance , ill judges vents and bodykit

991better than both and the 993 fro me too.

Fair enough but depends as well on your frame of reference. What do you consider attractive? Italian supercars have generally been beautiful. A Nissan GTR is functional. Which is A form of beauty in itself. True beauty is hard to encapsulate. What are we comparing 911's to? The basic Impact bumper SC is probably the defining 911 (open to challenges on that). Is it really beautiful or perhaps it's actually iconic? A subtle difference? Sometimes the shape transcends cliches of beauty and is simply what it is. The most beautiful 911 could theoretically be ugly to most people but somehow it has still managed to charm it's way into our souls so we see it as beautiful and so we're all a bit prejudicial. There are no rules to beauty. And beauty must always be flawed to connect to the soul.

OSCAR WILDE

“Beauty is a form of Genius--is higher, indeed, than Genius, as it needs no explanation. It is one of the great facts of the world, like sunlight, or springtime, or the reflection in the dark waters of that silver shell we call the moon. It cannot be questioned. It has divine right of sovereignty. It makes princes of those who have it.”

Ever thought that might be because on other forums you don't have 50 years of the same model to differentiate and choose between?

Not sure if your comment was aimed at this thread but it was just meant to be a bit of fun and something I hadn't seen on here before despite searching (which is somewhat contrary to your claim this happens all the time) until it was hijacked by what I presume is a troll!

I totally agree with that. Perfect beauty can be quite plain and boring.

Is any 911 beautiful? I think so. However the perception of beauty is deeply complex and not easily understood. Its probable that what I personally find beautiful was ingrained into my soul many years ago!

We are probably better off not truly understanding it too much. biggrin

If you look into it, most Porsche forums are extremely toxic. You'll find endless threads reeking with hostility towards certain models, utter disdain for drivers of Cayennes, women drivers etc.Derision of other peoples cars is de facto Porsche culture. Comes with the territory. A defining Porschephile trait. You tend not to find it with other Marques. Goes back to the schoolyard, the "T-Rex was the greatest dinosaur" mentality.
