The billionaire world is not as rosy as it used to be...

Russia is in the middle of a deep recession. Suffering from the effects of Ukraine, sanctions, low oil prices and a weak ruble.

Arab countries are reeling from the price of oil at circa $50

The Chinese Economy is in the midst of a "soft landing". Stock market has fallen 30%. Output figures are below expectation. Recently resorted to devaluing the Yuan.

Agreed. I would be a little nervous if I had recently spent that on an old car.

Maybe a price drop would see more old cars actually driven. I only see 993s in London these days.

IRC one of the main earners for the ginger one was trading motors, so this is possibly not really 'news' but a good bit of PR on his behalf to get publicity for upcoming auction.

I predict that the heat will demonstrably go out of the market during the big auctions starting tonight in Monterrey, and that the peak has passed already.

Yep, could be that he's just trading some of his cars he's currently up on to realise the profit, just as Exec's do with company shares on a regular basis.

Nice to be able to sell off a few each year as a nice bonus.

He's still sitting on a collection of very valuable cars. If it all goes tits up I'm sure he'll be buying some more up at lower values!

Great value, really?

It's a 1985 (B reg) so 915 box, LHD, but low miles. Still expensive at £32k.

If it was a RHD, G50 (87-89) at that price it would be great value!

Why would an auction house not keep their estimates high? Their commissions are based upon final hammer prices. As Jeremy says, it's whether the car sells or not and the price it sells for that count. Even stuff listed without reserve often does not sell...

Where has stuff come from!
Its common practice to low ball some cars, look at the 2.8rsr,well off the mark for what cars have been selling for.
There is something wrong with the market place if you think that old 3.2 carrera is good value, the 917 is cheap if it checks out compared to others that have changed hands

Exactly. I used to work at an auction house and as an auctioneer you need buyers and sellers. Getting buyers in is easier when they come for a bargain. Once they are there they will want to leave with something.

Well C3.2s are still at reasonably sane prices compared to most of their earlier equivalents. Not cheap by any means but miles better value for money from a pure driving perspective. SC is even better value, which is why I picked one up a few years ago.

Agree.

Furthermore LHD 3.2 in Germany go for same money as RHD here.

And this is the problem.

Buyers and sellers are trying justifying one car being good value because something else is a crazy price.

If you take spending £120k on a 1987 Ford Sierra 2.0 RS Cosworth 500 3dr 468 of 500 it's madness.

Now a 80,000 km LHD 1985 3.2 Carrera Coupe may look good value at £32k in comparison, but I'd argue neither were a smart buy.

You just have to and look at threads from 18 months ago to see prices people were calling crazy now being called cheap. Fast forward another 18 months, would you want to be left with a £32k LHD 3.2 with a 915 box if the bubble bursts?

I think you also need to buy the right model to ensure you're in safer position.

ie, a G50 911 will likely hold it value better than one with a 915 box if the prices did start to slide as there will always be more demand for the G50 ones. Likewise, a 964/993 C2 over a C4 etc.

if I had a LHD ( proper hand drive , non of this RHD aching knee ste wink ) 3.2 engined 915 box 911 in my garage in 18 months .. I'd be happy as larry as I'd have a cracking Impact Bumper car to have fun with .. wether it was worth £15K or £45 K . Life is to short to worry wether a classic sports car is going to suddenly start depreciating at the same rate as a new 320d

I don't buy into all the hype around the G50 box , I have two air cooled one with and one without - there is nothing wrong with a well set up 915 box , the are great fun smile
