Pretty much ignore journalists and the 993 mafia on here! Drive both and then make your choice. I'd personally look at buying a manual 996TT X50 (I'm biased). Anyone who can say it's a boring car probably sticks closely to speed limits and has never seen one being put through it's paces around Europe or cross country at daybreak!

Best post here on the last weeks!

Good to here from you Daz. Just had my 996TT X50 upgraded to 520bhp last month. Makes the 993TT as intersting as a ford focus laugh.

Someone who shall remain nameless(by me) on PCGB upgraded!!!! to a 996TT from a 993TT and now is regretting and sums it up perfectly for me.

"Hate to admit it - but I am already bored with my 996 TT. Only had 6 months - miss my 993TT

The 996 is just too "refined", great to drive/fast etc but lacks that "x factor". Doesnt have that much character - its just too good.

Fancy a GT3 or even a 993RS - but will lose money on the 996TT."

The big difference will be the depreciation and the looks of the cars and vmax it seems the 993TT's are beating the 996TT's..... nuff said........

To be fair the 993tts that are beating the 996tts at VMax are hardly stock ...

They are both astonishing cars and I think a lot will come down to how you want to use it. If you want a car that feels modern inside with (relatively) plenty of space, use every day, that you (or indeed anyone) can just jump in and go, and then drive very quickly indeed then I would say 996.

If you want a high days and holidays car, more edge, more of an event to drive, definitely less modern, don't mind it being much more cramped inside then go 993.

If depreciation is an issue then the 993 is probably stable and the 996 has a little further to go, but surely not much - these are truly super cars (in all senses).

Personally I prefer the looks and feel of the 993 but its like saying I prefer doughnuts to danish pastries - well I do but I wouldn't say no to either.

If you feel you are favouring the 993 I would also say that its worth considering a standard Carrera - I think there is a little bit more of a lightness and delicacy to the NA car over the turbo (though to be fair I've only ridden in a 993 turbo never driven one), this is probably also my bias showing through

However, I think that standard 993s are still dropping in price so won't have the bullet proof residuals that a turbo would.

I completely agree with the above, in fact I agree with almost evey post!

Depreciation is something I always bear in mind... not because pinching penny's is all that matters, but a penny saved is a penny earned!

The 996T is certainly the more modern, perhaps more "useable" car. However, as Teritus has discussed, my use is going to be over weekends and be more sparing - I have a bike and other cars I use for the more mundane. I want to feel special every time I get in, and while the 996T is certainly special (I disagree with those who say it is boring, etc) the 993T is even more so. It is a rare sight on the roads, will be more sought after in the future and better looking (all IMHO). Plus, both have plenty of poke! I think its the 993 for me. I wouldn't consider the 996 T becuase I think every year of ownership will knock off a grand here or there for a while yet.

As for the normally aspirated cars... I haven't really considered them, but this thread has made me think! I enjoy the punch of a turbo, it certainly is addictive. I want to feel like I am accelerating rapidly... Do the standard carreras (some beauts at Northways) feel fast, say compared to a 355 (which is the fastest normally aspirated car I have driven)?

Just a thought, but take a look at this.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-993-Tur

The car is cheaper than an RHD because it is LHD (I think...)

Does anyone this it is an option to buy this and take it across to LHD Europe and sell it for a profit, if the lack of same country driving position is the only negative?

Not considering this, but just wondering if its an easy way of generating a small profit if you can only afford LHD and then return and buy an RHD!

Well my standard NA Carrera manged 158 at VMax which I think is respectable, it certainlt felt effing fast to me, though as nothing compared to 197 in drhildr's RUF GT2 ...

Whereabouts are you? If you're in/near London then you are welcome to come for a spin in my car, and I'm sure others would offer the same.

Re. LHD, I have and prefer a LHD car due to the improved driving position.

Have been in that car - currently owned by Chronis of Carrera Cars.

It's bloody fast - we were doing silly numbers on the A41.

It's unbeleivebly clean, not surprised it hasn't sold seeing as he was asking over £50k for it.

Is that the "Walter Rohrl" spec car?

Looks really great, but personally I'd look for a "standard" 408 turbo, things like the large tank are a negative from my perspective though the yellow calipers are cool ...

Top speed matters very little to me, its the 10 - 60 and 30 - 100's that I enjoy the most.

I have seen 150+ just once in the entire duration of my ownership of cars (in the 944T)...

Could you explain why you would prefer a standard over this particular car if you could spare a moment Tertius? Why are some of the mods negatives?

Don't know about WR spec, but it's had the carbon passenger door card signed by the man himself.

It's a bit of a sledge hammer to crack a walnut kind of car IYKWIM, fast but feels really heavy and over damped.

The brakes are bloody awesome - wouldn't mind a set on mine

The "older is better".... "is a real Porsche" brigade are at it again sleep!

The 993TT is a fabulous car, still looks good after all these years (outside anyway, no way could I live with that interior hurl ) but it is an old car & if you take those rose tinted glasses off.. things have moved on! If retro is your thing, then great buy one, but the 996TT is better in virtually every single respect!

Put simply I would not want a 993TT, but loved my 996TT, others wouldn't have the 996, so in the final analysis, YOU must test drive both & decide which you prefer, because only you will know which is best for you,

Depends if you like a mature bottle of St Emmilion Grand Cru or a bottle of last years New World Chardonnay that's been blended for the 'modern' palate.

I know what I'd rather have, the mature full bodied one with the taste of deep fruit rather than the one that tastes of cheap aftershave hehe

Very simple. The 996tt is 50 times better than the 993 tt apart from looks and build quality,996tt will lose money and the 993tt may not.Driving any air cooled Porsche and saying it is remotely as good as as any 996 or 997 is bollox,as a driving car.For nostalgia and quirkiness the air cooled cars win it.If you want a pose buy a 993tt,if you want a car that makes the 993tt feel like it was designed for Bodecia buy a 996tt.

50 times better? surely not, I thought it was about 67 times better wasn't it?

I've had 4 993's and only this one is RHD - the LHD driving position is MUCH better.
I'm sure i will return to LHD at some point, maybe when i buy my 4S back or if i buy an RS.

If you want to enjoy spending time below 100mph then i'd stay away from a 993tt. A 'normal' 993 is much more fun below seriously license losing velocities... please don't flame me for this, but in my year of daily driving the turbo i probably exceeded 140mph every day, even if only for a brief moment. It just wasn't much fun at lower speeds even on the back roads, it's SO capable...

Except the Grand Cru has been around for a long while, has had many owners & hasn't been looked after properly, it has become corked & tastes like sh*t, the bottle looks nice though!

Ah VS... just the information I wanted explored! Could you elaborate further on your post please? Why is it more fun? This is important, because after all that is what it is all about...

Is the turbo lag a factor in this car inspite of its twins?

Have to admit the size of a 996 puts me off a bit, the 993 seems smaller!
