Some absolutely stonking cars on this thread. I'll hold my hands up, if money was no object and I could have just one "toy" car for life, it would almost certainly be an air cooled 911. I still remember my Matchbox Superkings metallic green 911 with the opening doors complete with little plastic sliding door handles and an opening engine cover, also the time when a family friend took me out as a 13 year old in his brand new 930 turbo and didn't hold back (bear I mind my mum drove a beetle at the time) and my brain simply couldn't compute the performance, and the time back in the 90s when as a young twenty something driving a Vauxhall Nova my boss's boss chucked me the keys to his 964 and asked me to go and park it. All magic stuff, and if I did have an a/cooled 911 I have no doubt that all it's foibles would be excused on grounds of "specialness" and sentimentality.
However bits of this thread do make me chuckle...it seems like some of the 911/964/993 guys are "one" regardless of the differences in their cars, collectively saying that air cooled is simply superior, but mark my words in 5-10 years time it will be 911/964/993/996/986/987/997 as one, owners all musing over when handbrakes were handbrakes, keys actually slotted into a proper mechanical hole in the dash and you actually turned them to fire the engine up, steering had fluid, "proper" Porsches had 6 cylinders but only special ones had blowers and they all drank fuel like it was going out of fashion and bizarrely most had 3 pedals even though people only had 2 feet. And in the same way that beige is cool, impact bumpers are getting cool, chrome is cool, and narrow hips on a car have "purity", cars will no doubt be advertised with "unmolested complete with original ambers and classic fried egg headlights" as an important feature.
But please keep the air cooled pics coming...pure Porsche porn!

This thread is great at showcasing my favorite part of aircooled Porsches: not the pretty shapes, the lively handling or the glorious sounding engines but the owners of the cars and the community they built around them. People who "understand" older Porsches just seem to get along and have nothing to prove.
I started to look at a Cayman R, Spyder or GT4 a while ago, looked at the various postings of the "regulars" here on PH and on other forums and the overall tone made had me shake my head in disbelief. This also reflects my general experience at car meets, trackdays and other events.

Thanks for that - you know what , unfortunately I must admit I really don't know enough about the racing stuff to be able to tell the difference. I have a bit of a dream that as soon as work is less mental & I get some good , free quality time , if I'm lucky enough , I'd love someone amazing to teach me how to drive properly by spending some proper time in these sorts of things - but for now the drooling will do - repro or real it really was stunning - is it anyones on here - I saw it at the OPC in Leicester in the summer ( I think ?)
Its recently changed hands again, nice car.You can be forgiven, even most of the experts get them wrong!Come up to the rs track day,we can give you a sample of what can be done in these old timers.
Doom all these 2.8 should be road registered, interesting to see a lolipop in one and a lwt seat in the other in your photo.

I'm even road registering the brumos 356!
This is quite amusing. I like the fact he got the clock plastic clicking as the internal temp alters. I press mine and get the click click!!
