Should I buy a Cayman R, or a Boxster Spyder?
Discussion
They have a black spyder at OPC Tonbridge, noticed it the other day when my CS was in for its first service. To be honest given the choice between a CR and a Spyder I would discount the Spyder as we are in the UK (and personally I don't like the roof) so it would be the CR for me although many add the aircon and pcm back in so not sure what I would gain over my well specced CS pictured here outside Tonbridge
Personally I'd ignore residuals, you're going to get boned on either car. Though if I had to flip a coin, I'd expect less on the Spyder, particualrly if they don't do a Spyder version of the new model.
Which you'd buy depends on a couple of things. How you're going to use it and what you're prepared to put up with. If you plan to use the car heavily in the UK (which has st weather, let's face it), the Cayman R is the choice. However if it's going to be a weekend toy, I'd choose the Spyder every time. Lid off motoring is where it's at, and I've driven the Spyder in the middle of winter lidless and it was marvellous (wrap up and stick the blowers on and it's really quite nice in there).
The other biggy for me is the price differential. It may only look like a couple of grand, but you need to add nothing to a Spyder when you get it (just factor in £400 for a Carnewal exhaust mod). The Cayman is already a few grand more, but then you need to add climate control back in (which is not free), things like a rear wiper and other bits that just add up the cost. By the time I was finished on the configurator I think I was at a £10k mark up over the Spyder... FWIW the stereo in the Spyder is pointless, you can't hear the f**king thing and it sounds st. You'll probably want it in the Cayman however if you're using it heavily.
Then we have the final problem. I truly believe the Spyder is the best all-round car Porsche make, the comedy roof just means it'll be all the more rare for people who are prepared to put up with the small inconvenience of it. However. I've thought about this quite a bit and I really struggle to justify buying one. My problem is that on our roads, I can have 95% of the fun in my boggo Cayman. So much so that I can drive my brothers Spyder, enjoy it, but not come out of the experience with the overriding urge to buy one. They're an amazing car, but are they really £25k better than a 2.9, nearly new, warranted, Boxster or Cayman?

exactly where I got to ...enjoy it, but not come out of the experience with the overriding urge to buy one. They're an amazing car, but are they really £25k better than a 2.9, nearly new, warranted, Boxster or Cayman?
Not sure if it helps, but I have just bought a Cayman R and am really thrilled with it. I bought it from Leeds and it was pre registered but with loads of extras, pdk, sports exhaust, Sports Chrono, etc. I bought it so I could use it daily (if required) and be practical. Its certainly quick enough and the handling is just perfect. There are two Spyders in White pre registered at Leeds, they look lovely, I agree with other people on that, but I need to sometimes leave it outside so it was a non starter. I am new to Pistonheads and this forum is such a good place for advice, everyone seems willing to help and share advice.

Went to see the black spyder on Saturday - best price (it's already registered, but hasn't done any miles) was £48,292!!
I thought that was a bit steep for effectively a used car.
There's a black one at OPC Aberdeen with a mere 2160 miles on the clock (hardly run in) for £12k less - that suit you?I thought that was a bit steep for effectively a used car.
Had a demonstration of the roof removal procedure on Saturday and it looks a right faff - much rather just press a button!

Whereas £12,000, is quite definitely worth having!

Boxster Spyder, White (naturally) with PDK box - Ran one for 6mts & 7k before my GT3 RS, I may actually have preferred it!?... Mega car and I REALLY miss it :0(
there is a spanking new one of these in OPC Reading + a Cayman R in Seal Grey??? niceMy Spyder will be up to 20,000 miles in about 4 weeks time - epically fast and completely impractical in every respect - I am loving it!!!!!

How the Spyder has slipped under the radar beggars belief, believe me in ten years time these things will be future 964RS etc following... Simple, lightweight, awesome. Wait til they hit £20k and I'll be bagging another white PDK with sports exhaust, black wheels & a battery conditioner to put in the garage with a 916 or MV Agusta to just look at, and occasionally enjoy. Future classic no doubt, Cayman R sadly won't be - not THAT much better than the already excellent Cayman S.My Spyder will be up to 20,000 miles in about 4 weeks time - epically fast and completely impractical in every respect - I am loving it!!!!!

I think the roof, and how they treated it on Top Gear, killed off a good deal of interest. Now I've seen it for myself, I'm afraid I agree - its just too much of a faff.
60 seconds of faff is no problem - what did people do before electric hoods . . . . faffed about a lot!Its surprising how such an unobtrusive piece of material can give so much protection from wind/rain/noise - completely bearable on long journeys IMHO even at (uuumm) Motorway speeds.

But that is the point. People have become lazy and just want to press a button to raise/lower the roof. True enthusiasts are more than happy to accept this for the beneifits its bestows in trems of weight saving, etc, but your average convertable driver can't be bothered. Absolutely agree with regards to the 'faff' of the roof. But for those of us with two hands it really is a only 60 second faff....
..and those two humps at the back make it far enough removed from the 'push me - pull me' effect for me to buy a Boxster.
