OK, so now we've answered the OP's question, and decided that the Spyder is the best ( biggrin ), and that he should buy a nearly new example, the next question is what options he should be searching for.

Clearly bucket seats and the standard Spyder alloys. Also PSE must be a must have. Then, it's a case of accepting that the future appeal is of a lightweight, back to basics special. So that means manual transmission and no aircon or satnav. Then it's down to own preference for colour, sports chrono, reverse sensors (to protect that lovely rear end)..... Also PCCB? (suits the lightweight ethic, but adds cost & complexity?)

Love my Spyder, great looking car with the roof on or off. I think it looks more special than a R and the fact you can't order a Spyder anymore means it is a very rare car on uk roads. The roof to anyone that owns one is really not a faff at all once you know how to do it, your really a bit dim if you struggle with it. Top gear etc really exaggerated how difficult it is.

Massive step up IMO over our old 987 with the "st" engine, the new DFI engine is a gem no silly intermediate shafts to go wrong, fantastic fuel economy for a 3.4, loads more get up and go in gear than old lump. It feels far more nimble and alert than my old 986 and 987 and it's not until you see a normal boxster parked next to a Spyder that you realise how much nicer it looks and a very special car. IMO the Spyder is a proper sports car and a better drive than normal carreras, so much snobbery around 911's, having driven a few the Spyder blows them away. Give that chassis the power and engines the GT cars and Turbo have and it will demolish them also. Can't ever see it happening though unless Porsche attempt to phase the 911 out again or bring another model out alongside it.

Eta- I'm not knocking 911's either I love them to bits but annoying that everyone knows that the cayman etc could be even better than they are! Looking forward to driving a 991 and potentially eating my words!!

'Clearly' bucket seats?

I thought that at first however, having tried one with them I opted for sports seats.
Couldn't get comfy, I'm far too muscular for them ( smile ).

Having said that, it took me a while to get a comfy position in the sports seats...(I have now though).

I'll agree with most of your other bits regarding the spec though, especially the PSE.

I spent many hours deciding on spec before ordering. I tried to keep to the pure, lightweight theme as best I could, but also ensured in the long term it looked desirable and offered some comfort to the driver (as it's a road car and not a racecar).

So what I think is perfect spec;

- Carrara White (based on working with the red details and contrast of graphics and wheels).
- 'Spyder' alloys, painted black. (They look great and work well against the White).
- Full leather interior (lifts quality of dash and doors) chose black to keep the red detailing and contrast.
- Bucket seats. (They look stunning and find them comfy, part of the cars package and appeal).
- Sports exhaust (probably the best option of the lot).
- Air con (will I ever notice the 0.03 sec penalty around a lap time for the weight? No ... Will I notice being baking hot and feeling incomfortable? Yes!)
- Radio/sound package. (Not a race car, basic comfort)
- Extended alcantara package (just doors, not gear stick and wheel. Looks special)
- Crested seats (nice detail).
- Mats (shocking you have to pay for them!)

Think that's it.

Pccb was too expensive and probably not really necessary. Would be interested to try one to see if it feels any different ride wise and steering feel.

Only other thing I wish I'd done was leather trimmed sun visors. Standard they look and feel bloody cheap.

Really love the car.

Nice SFO.

It does make a difference to the feel (and looks) of quality having those visors done and the inner door guards.

It is just those little bits you always see and feel. Should have done it., but i can live without.

My neighbour just knocked tonight and has agreed a deal on a white Spyder.

It was bought a month ago by a guy whos wife went beserk when he took it home. It subsiquently came straight back on offer at the OPC and my mate has haggled hard.

Only a couple of thousand miles from new, one owner, plus the other guy for a day. laugh

Can't wait to go out in it. I love them. They look so special.

Haha, yep.
The guy apparently bought it without telling 'er indoors and she went mental (as they do quite often) when he arrived home in it.

My mate had rang up for it to be told it was sold to the guy, then the stealers rang him back a day or two later to say it was back.

Nowt so queer as folk eh. laugh

Happened with my Exige - guy buys it and takes it home.
Puts it in his garage and a week later his wife sees it and tells him to take it back to the dealer.

Still had the paper over mats in it when he took it back.

Excellent! laugh

Surely if you know your wife is hard work, you just don't do things like that!

I like their style though.

Well, when I sold my X50 and decided to buy the Exige, I sort of mentioned it in passing to the wife, but I don't think she believed I'd do it.

She was away all week when I picked the Exige up and when she got home I just left the garage door open so she could see what was inside....

Nice one! I take it you're still together? smile

I think my girlfriend would see the funny side if I done that. Just depends on what we had planned at the time.

She understands my addiction to cars though.

Aye, we're fine!

I think she was secretly relieved when the Exige came to a sticky end and I bought the Spyder.
She was very enthusiastic when I mentioned having another Porsche...
