would not buy one without warranty...especially gen1 unless you have £10-15k lying around if st were to hit the fan....warranty gives u piece of mind. I'd get cover for any performance car over £20k+ from the manufacturer. Had it for e46 m3...will continue renewing for 997...as I did just today.

The GT3 and turbo have a different (non chocolate) block to the standard 996/997!

Blimey - 38,000 track miles... so, that's equivalent to 380,000 road miles! It must only be worth £16.74 by now. Can I buy it off you? smile

Buy a warranty from Porsche. It is pretty comprehensive and means you can use the car without worrying. I have had 3 claims in a year (leaking door membrane, sticking tip selector and trailing arm). Remember it is a warranty and not engine insurance so is actually not bad value!

Everyone seems to insist you need one, but the older 997s will soon be non eligible for the OPC warranty, does this mean they will all blow up and be worth 50p? I don't think so...

Ideally what you want is one which has had some work on the engine done, possibly by the likes of Autofarm with their Silsleeve technology.

Best if you have a look on their website as its explained better than I will ever manage. Mind you, there aren't many around with that work carried out.

Have run my 2005 C2S for three year without, after two years with OPC one, took the view that most expenses would be wear and tear as it got older so not worth the paper its written on, and cost doubled one year shifting the risk/reward balance in favour of keeping thecash myself.

Also car never uses any oil between services, oil pressure remains at 5bar all the time. Only non service items to date have been rear dampers(due to shocking roads) and one coil pack.

The internet is full of doom mungers, buy these cars as they simply a brillant drive and an engineering masterpiece. I intent to keep mine a long time (unless of course GTS's start to get sensible money!)

Couldn't agree more.

Before my current Turbo I had a un-warrantied 3.4 996, according to the doom mongers it doesn't get any worse than that.

Had it 4 years, many miles and many trackdays and it never went near a dealer other than every 12 months for servicing and MOT's.

Make sure it's been well looked after, good history etc etc, then just get out there buy it and drive it. You can't live your life on "What if".

I mostly agree with what you're saying, but if one answer to the 'What if' question could possibly financially ruin you, I think you'd be mad not to give it due consideration regardless of the odds, IMHO.

Had mine since feb with no warranty.
It's a 2006 C4S and done 52000+ miles.
Some people like the piece of mind, I prefer the cash in the bank wink
IMO you have to be very unlucky for an engine to let go and if that did happen to me I'd rather have Hartech or Autofarm sort it than my local OPC.

Hi there

Internet scaremongering, reality is the 997 is a very very reliable car. Yes I've got a warranty on my car, all I've needed doing is an output flange seal, but such thing is a small cost fix.

No scoring on my bores, cars uses practically no oil now and I change the oil every 6000 miles in mine, no metal fragments in oil or on filter.

I think if its a 2006 model car or newer just enjoy it as the chance of an engine/gearbox failure I suspect is below 1%, if its an older 2004/2005 model car then maybe look at getting the IMS uprated and always get the bores pre-inspected which does not cost much.

...But if the dreaded £10k + engine failure happens to you you'll be sick as a dog when you look back at this thread where you ask the question. When we finally get our 987 (still saving!) we'll be getting an independents warranty.

I'd be careful of indie warranties - they tend to find excuses not to pay out - get a Hartech warranty etc - i.e. with a specialist.

Apologies, that's actually what I meant - independent dealers. Agreed about warranty companies!

Maybe a different block but plenty still end up leaking like sieves.
