Guess what happened to me today mid hoon? Fecking accountants building cars. Barsteward gear shift cable snapped (The linkage at the end I'm guessing). Is there any truth to the rumour that the cable has plastic links at the end instead of metal ones as on the GT2 and the Cup/Race cars? ie building the car to a budget.

If anyone has had this happend or knows anything I'd appreciate hearing from you. I am particularly interested in replacing the cable with an enhanced part rather than the standard candyfloss one.

BTW First Breakdown lorry took 2 1/2 hours to arrive and discoved his winch was broke. Next breakdown lorry took another hour. 3 1/2 hours stood in the middle of nowhere and it was 34 degress centigrade according to the gizmo in the car.

Seem to remember a while ago the gear shifter cable also went on two Boxsters when they were being tested against two TVRs for a TV program.

I had the same thing happen on my GT3 twenty seconds into a track day at Donnington, coming out of the old hairpin I changed from thrid to fourth and the gearshift linkage snapped & that was the end of the track day for me. I know the GT3 cup cars have a stronger linkage but I am not sure if it will fit the turbo. I have only ever heard of one other broken linkage again on a GT3 so its not a common problem.
Manthey racing sell the cup car linkage for around 300 euro.

Happened on my GT2 (same plastic end linkage) during 2nd to 3rd gearchange.

Evo Motorsports in USA make a metal end linkage.

Mine was done by OPC so they fitted new stocl plastic part........if it goes again I'll get them to fit a metal one.

Same thing happened to me in my last 996c2 while chasing a mod'd Supra, changing from 4th to 5th. Had to drive it all the way to garage stuck in 5th! This was about 3 years ago, got them to replace it with a stock item.
It had broken just where the plastic stops.

Just had a call advising my prognosis was correct. The offending plastic part costs about £10 and is now on order, with delivery expected tomorrow morning. Anticipate collecting the car tomorrow lunchtime when I will have a discussion about the uprated parts Russell and Guy have referred to above.

Car collected with new plastic shiftlink, all covered by warranty. I will be replacing the plastic shiftlink with the bit from evoms.com I have been told this will not invalidate the warranty and the garage are happy to fit the part if I obtain it. I will be ordering the alloy shiftlink later this week.

Anyone know if there are any UK suppliers?

Seems to be a common Pork thing, I had the same thing on a 928 GT a good few years back, mind you needed to be a weight lifter to use that gearbox (dog leg first gear...yuk)!!
Anyway hope it's as good as new again soon Daz.

Thanks for the link Jeff. Interesting warning at the start of the thread!! My aims in purchasing the unit is not to change the feel of the gearshift but to avoid breaking down and being stranded by the side of the road, possibly in Europe when I am on a tight schedule and don't speak the local language. Interesting that the inner part of the EVO link is made of plastic. I am told that my failed unit had cracked on the shaft between the spring and the ball joint coupling, not the actual ball joint surround itself.

Right done all my research. Not bothering with short shift kits as they make it easier to grab the wrong gear. I've ordered the alloy shiftlink from www.evoms.com , cost was $135 plus a further $35 for international shipping (plus the dreaded import tax and vat no doubt). I'll update this thread when I know how long it took my OPC to fit it.

Edited to say the shiftlink arrived on 24th aug, just need to get it fitted now before eurohoon.

Fitted in early september. Took 2 hours.
