Been thinking about this for a while, since seeing this one advertised by Gmund.

http://www.gmundcars.com/cars/850/944turbossilverr...

I've never driven one and even though I've had faster, newer, possibly more exciting car but I've always wanted one these. Having done some research it seems that these will lose very little money and maybe even appreciate. I'd most likely buy it and try and get it to as near concours condition as possible. Also helps that my dad had one from new and I have nothing but great memories of that car....except when the new owner wrote it off several weeks after buying it!
Whats the general consensus on these being a future classic?

Im my (limited) understanding, the correct name for this car is 944 turbo S and not SE.
This was Porsche's special edition car, which featured extra power over the standard 944 of its time. Once Porsche were inundated with people wanting to buy the S, they started to make the SE, which had most of the mods seen on the S.

This car looks time warp, and with uner 100k on the clock it should. The colour is 'the' Porsche Turbo S press release car and the interior looks in good condition. The correct deck chair pink material looks in great shape - this material is no longer available via Porsche. I did hear of someone paying £350/meter privatly for this when he was restoring a car.

How much are they asking for it? The advert reads £0.00 which is a bargain :-).

Seriously though, I guess its about £10k. I would imagine that this car would hold its value for the short term and eventually start to creep upwards. I guess that it will max out at £15k, but it all depends on what someone wants to pay. Sad as it is, the 944 will always live in its older sisters shadow. The 911 is by far more desirable - by those who dont know what the 944 is capable of. It was and still is faster than the equivalent 911 of its time, and far more pleasant to drive.

I have a really soft spot for the 944 and rarely see a well looked after honest car. Most have fallen into budget terratory where maintaince is often forgotten and botch repairs are carried out. I am looking for a good 944 turbo at a decent price to rolling restore and see some awful cars.

Sorry for the rambling....I hope that it was of some help?

From my understanding they introduced the S (it was known as the SE in the UK) and then once the limited run was done they incorporated all of the upgrades into the standard 944 Turbo package.
That particular car was sold not so long ago, with the price being £19,995! It didnt hang around for long though.
I havent seen another silver rose for sale since that one so they must be few and far between. The only reason I'm interested in the silver rose is because of childhood memories etc.

I've always wanted a silver rose, there's something about the dubious taste issues it has that somehow makes a really special package.

That said like the poster above I'm looking for a ropey 944 turbo to do a resto on, but ropey and saveable cars for the right money are rare things. Lots are several K but need more spending than it would cost to get a nice one, not many are actually saveable.

The "S" would be worth relatively big bucks in 944T terms if Porsche hadn't kicked the speculators in the nuts in 89 by making the standard car almost "S" spec. The anoraks may get wood over a silberosa colour car but other than the sunroof delete which I believe some yanks had put back in, a well specified 89/90 car is just as worthy.

I think one of the mechanics at Jaz was considering selling his silver rose. This was early this year or late last year. You could try contacting them?

Looks like a SE to me, 220-250bhp with the "turbo" graphics. Gmund know better than me though. Future classic? I'd have thought so, yes. Want one actually smile

looks like a silver rose as it doesnt have the sunroof. whcih on the 944 is great, and I would rather not have this one because of it. I'd rather have an 89 Turbo: all of the silver rose goodies on as standard, but a wider range of colours and the fabulous sunroof. Ahhh, F640OVW, where are you now????

It was called a Turbo S everywhere except in the UK where it was called the Turbo SE. On the original sales invoice for my dads old 944 Turbo SE, which is identical to the one Gmund are selling, it states that its a 944 Turbo SE.
Unfortunately I dont have this to hand as its in a storage unit along with a lot of my dads other belongings that I need to sort out, otherwise I'd post it. It also states the colour as silver rose, like the Gmund car. The invoice was from AFN.

Also, I'm not claiming to have any expert knowledge, only what I know from my research.

Ours said "944 Turbo S" and "Silver" on the V5. However I think they were marketed by Porsche UK as Turbo SE so no doubt this may vary for every car. Did not have the "Turbo" script.

My wife loved driving ours, and we only moved it on when at 130k miles it was starting to smoke badly on boost and we needed a family car. The 944 had been chipped by BBR from new and had a massive kick on (delayed) boost. Scared myself silly the first time and mashed the pedal to the floor - nothing, nothing sideways.

With the balancer shafts it was amazingly flexible and smooth for a 4 cylinder engine - quite a feat of engineering. We were forever getting the wheels refurbed and the brakes never felt quite right with the ABS.

I loved mine. In its day the 944 turbo s was as rapid and fun as anything on the road. They don't age well mechanically though. 25 years on and they'll be problematic. Mine cost fortunes to run

My memory's not perfect, but I distinctly recall Performance Car magazine reviewing this car against the Ferrari 328 GTS. It was the 944 Turbo SE. I'd now put money on it.

I've got a copy of the 1988 Autocar with the 944 Turbo SE vs the 911 Carrera CS. The 911 won the test.

AFAIK they incorporated the Turbo S/SE changes into the standard Turbo model.
You own a 944 according to your profile so why are you asking me these questions? I'm not an expert by a long shot.
