Do any of you owning a Gen 2 997 Turbo hear a sort of chirping noise on start up of the engine?

Mine has been making a short, perhaps 1 or 2 second "chirp" sound when the engine turns over.

I'm not too concerned because I've got the warranty etc, but have had a complete mare with one of the Porsche centres making mistake after mistake, that my belief in them is somewhat wanting.

I did a Silverstone day today, and the turbo I drove didn't make such a sound....

Would suggest that one of your plugs has an issue. Not unknown for the top part of the plug to come apart, and it causes a chirping noise.

possible loose spark plug. Had a similar issue a few years ago on a 996turbo.

This may not be turbo issue; after my last service with auxillary belt and plugs being changed it also briefly chirped; I think it could be a plug slightly loose, or as others have said, broken.
Mine is going to be checked; annoyingly it has not done it for the last few days.....

Have the serpentine belt condition checked too.

While the belt and accessory drive pulleys could be wet or just damp the belt could be wearing out. Even if the belt isn't due to be changed on time or miles if the belt is making the noise it could be an early warning sign of trouble as the belt may not be tracking right or wearing out prematurely due to some other problem.

As an aside: My 03 Turbo's belt chirps once in a great while upon cold engine start provided the car has sat outside in the rainy weather or every time I wash the car.

The belt and pulleys get wet and the belt slips -- one can see the results of this by the fact the volt meter reading is real low as the belt is not turning the alternator -- and it chirps as the belt grips, then slips again, the grips again. A few times this has gone on way longer than I'm comfortable with but in the end the belt and pulleys dry and the belt is then quiet and the volt meter reading climbs to near 14v.

After much digging around they have ruled out loose spark plugs.

They have ordered a new starter motor and will know today whether its that making the noise.....

Scratch that, apparently the service advisor was "mistaken", they didn't order a new starter motor, that isn't the problem. 1.5 weeks later and they are back onto the idea of the spark plugs being loose again...........hmmmmmm

Nuts! Why don't they just torque up the plugs and let you see how things go on???

Because that would involve intelligence .................if it is any consolation my 05 KN is spending another week off the road as over here in Portugal they cannot believe that someone owns a V8 Turbo so sent the cooling pipes for a diesel. Sadly there is no Portuguese word for MUPPET.

If only this wasn't the tip of the iceberg; I now have enough material in my 1.5 years of Porsche experience to write an incredibly dull, resentful analysis of main dealer stupidity - it would write like fiction....

Twist my arm....

Turbo bought in January of this year

February - cruise control breaks and drivers side window has a mind of its own - into the garage. Car returned, but the PCM has been disabled, so I can't use its functions and window still doesn't work properly - back to the garage
Car back - window still not fixed, back again.

February - Sunroof problems - car into garage. 1 week later, no idea what wrong, think we've fixed it, back to me. Not fixed. Back to garage. Going to take 3 weeks whilst we replace the whole sunroof. Car returned with fresh scratches + no sunroof spoiler installed, so loud wind buffeting. Explain this to service advisor - car goes back in. They don't listen to what is wrong and replace "curtains" - return the car with scratches fixed. Buffeting still there - again, I explain with reference to pistonheads that there should be a pop up spoiler - car goes back in. 2 days later - all seems to be fine sir. I ask them to double-check (this is the Porsche sunroof expert apparently, who I speak to) - ah, I've just checked another 997.2 and can see that there is this pop up spoiler which prevents wind-buffeting, so sorry, we'll order that in for you! Car returned to me with a fresh dent - back in for dent to be repaired.

April - Car into garage because of belt slipping noise on start-up. Car returned, supposedly fixed - it isn't. What did you do, I ask - "we cleaned the rear break discs". Car back in. Can't identify noise despite me sending sound recordings - tell me "they all do that", it's turbo chatter apparently. I leave this one.

May - back in again because start-up noise got worse. 1.5 weeks - told them they should look at spark plugs. Report back that this isn't the problem, going to replace starter motor. That's fixed it, pick up the car on saturday - it hasn't. Back to garage Tuesday. New service advisor - they are checking the spark plugs. You did that last week though - oh, they didn't tighten them correctly....

I've missed out a lot of other stuff - they scratched my other car twice as well last year!

Jeez, do they moonlight the cars on the banger racing circuit or something. Hope you get it all resolved (and then get a relationship going with a good indy).

After a month they couldn't get to the bottom of it and classified it as a "characteristic" of the engine!!
