Hi all,

Been toying with the idea of getting a 997 carrera at the end of this year but wondered what you thought of the market at the moment, is it realistic to say the price circa £20k won't drop any further?

I'd be looking for one around £20k.

Cayenne's were funny because they hit £15k mark, now they are around £8/9k within the space of a year.

Nah, they will definately keep going down. As long as they keep making new ones in big numbers, the used ones will keep going down.

I personally think the 997 will go up in value over the very long term as it'll be seen a bit like the 993 as the last of a line before wholly electronic devices were introduced with the 991 (gearbox, steering etc) but as a general rule, I'm expecting them to keep dropping as the market is saturated currently.

This. A regular common as muck spec/colour or auto 997 will continue depreciating. A more rare, top specification will hold value and if kept in very good condition could/will hold value better. People will pay for good examples, a little like 996 C4S or Turbo S with perfect specification and 993's, but 997 is considered the best of the water-cooled cars, its small, great fun and modern at same time.

circa 4000 manual c2s gen 1 and 450 manual c2s gen 2 registered as new you have to add to this total the gts 100 manual cars.(all coupes i must add)
imho prices of manual gen2 cars will remain firm and hence so will good late gen1s

I think those numbers highlight what a "common" car the manual 997 is.

At circa £20k it's a great buy and offers so much more that a warmed up euro-box.

Will be more expensive to maintain and run though...

Will any non-GT2/3 997 ever be truly collectable? If so, it would be the GTS IMO, even over the Turbo.

there are 3 x as many pdk cars over manual on the gen2.
the bulk of gen1 cars were registered 2005/2006 some 2500+
so i maintain manual gen2 and late ie 2008/9 gen1 cars in time good cars with lowish miles will be thin on the ground and hold up well against the 991.
the vanilla carrera is even thinner in numbers so might prove the better long term purchase

If your worried about depreciation on a £20k 997 these might not be the cars for you, the running costs can soon build up, warranty, tyres, brakes , clutch, servicing, fuel can get eye watering expensive.... Unless its a garage queen of course wink I did 2.5 years in one that I bought for high 30's and I think I cost something like £19k on depreciation and running costs ( that's without fuel!) I did about 16k miles which isn't that many in the grand scheme of things

I think the answer is linked to how far do you think 996s will fall. The cars are similar, albeit you would probably choose a 997 over a 996 (all things being equal). What is a good 996 C2 worth? circa £14-15k? I think there will always be a £4-5k premium for a 997, as a facelift 996 seems to be some £3k higher than a 3.4.

Will 996's fall to £6-7k? it's possible, and then I think 997s would be circa £10k.

Luke.

You've been able to find 996s for £7k for a little while now. 997s are still far from £10k however.

I doubt you'd get a good one though for £7k. Reasonable miles, good condition, good spec is more likely to be £12-£15k (early vs facelift).

nope, I have been looking for the last two weeks for a 996.

A decent one with FSH, circa 80-110k in decent condition can be had for under 9k. I was looking at a basalt black one with factory fitted GT3 bodykit, 110k Miles and in beautiful condition with FPSH for 8750!!

Unfortunately it sold before I could get it but there are lots more out there. I am holding out for one with GT3 looks but there are 4/5 currently under 10k with the kit just not in a suitable colour combo for me.

no no and no

I already own a 911 (aircooled) so am not totally niave,With aircooled values going up considerably I want to relieve it from being my joint daily along with an Esprit and a Chimaera. I also have owned a plethora of TVR's and plenty of classic sports cars.

I am thinking specifically of two. Both had FULL service history, Gleaming exterior and lovely interior with minimal bolster wear on drivers side. Any 996 has potential for large future bills.
Both under 9k and both with GT3 body kits. One was Basalt black with tan interior, the other silver with grey interior which I didnt like the combo. Both now sold.

This is the one I literally missed out on by a couple of hours and was a little gutted.
