thought i might add my thoughts on the 997 having sat in one today...

exterior styling, very suspect, almost like a partially squashed and stretched herbie...
don't like the rounded boot lid.
don't like the diagonal join line from the rear bumper on the body. looks like a 19 year old design student penned that feature.
don't like door handles - unimaginative.
wing mirrors are stylish, 19" wheels are the nuts. interior is far too executive and dull and deserved no more comment other than to say it felt cramped and busy.
it could be any old executive snooze-mobile inside.
circular steering wheel thing is pants.
round headlights look duff.

looked at the carrera s which was sat next to a 996 4s, and would pick the 4s any day of the week. which is quite lucky really....

i shan't be getting one....

Agreed. Not mad about the 996 interior but the 997 doesn't do a lot for me either. The centre console looks too fussy and the switches aren't that much better quality. Prefer the 996 steering wheel too.

Like the exterior styling of the 997 but I think the interior is a backward step from the 996. That circular steering wheel is horrible and would not look out of place in a mass produced hatchback.

Agree though, the wheels look great.

Had a good look at one, not driven as yet. Think the interior looks much better quality than the 996, except the over-complicated and cheap looking sat nav / screen controls. Doesn't look obviously porsche inside though...

Like the front, sides - big improvement, not so keen on the back. The S wheels look much better in real life than the pics, as others have said.

A step in the right direction, but really just a facelift .

Walked past one without realising in the OPC, says it all..........

Also interior is just too 'Passat' for my liking and 911s should not have that many buttons.......

I regard the 997 as a useful improvement over the 996 . If only because the 997 affords quite a bit more room for lanky gits like me.

More headroom, more legroom, and more room for knees under the steering wheel.

996 4s definately the better looking car. That said compare the standard 997 carrera with the standard 996 carrera and the 997 looks better, once the 997 gets a more dramatic guise in the shape of a turbo body hopefully we will all have something to stand and admire.

Carrera 4S boring, slow, lethargic and very understeery.

997S, Charasmatic, fun, involving and oversteery without driver aids

Carrera 4S old
Carera 2S New

Any idea how much more headroom over a 996?

Come on, you'll get over it.
Time has a habit of healing(!)
Once all the add ons & do-dads come along, a new GT3, GT2 & Turbo, they won't seem all that bad....!

Well I had a 997Cs test drive a couple of weeks ago and felt that it was somehow rather bland. I'm a little indifferent on the looks, not sure between it and the 996. But from a driving perspective it felt smooth quiet and comfortable - no real sense of occasion - that's not to say it didn't drive well, seemed well planted chucked it around a few round abouts in sport mode etc. but it just felt like a modern saloon car, albeit a well sorted one The straight line acceleration seemed a little dull - but then I am used to the 996TT, so that's probably not a fair comparison. In general it felt good in all respects - but lacking something, not quite sure what, but I want my sports cars to feel special - I think I prefer the 996 TT as we're talking similar money these days - just my 2p!

I guess it all depends on what you've come from. The 997 looks fantastic to me. But then again, I own a Skoda

Just come back from a test drive in a 997S (if only all lunchtimes were this much fun... )
First impressions are that the ride and handling are much better sorted than my 996 C2: more front end grip, more progressive drift on the roundabouts, great steering and pedal feel.
Unfortunately, things aren't so impressive on the inside: the centre console in particular looks and feels really cheap, the handbrake and its surround is made of thin "clanky" plastic (although there is an option to cover it in leather which may help), but the steering wheel was horrid compared to mine.

This doesn't make the choice between 996TT and 997S any easier. Before this test drive, I was certain the 997 would win, but now...

Only one worry - what's going to happen to the residuals on each?

A similar priced TT is going to cost a lot more to run than a 997S and that is my prime reason for buying an S as opposed to a TT. The other being I hate 4wd
