What to expect when collecting a new car from OPC?
Discussion
I'm collecting a new Cayman S from an OPC in London in a few week’s time. It's my first ever brand new car, let alone my first Porsche. I'm part exchanging my old Diesel Scirocco, will it just be sitting down, doing the paperwork and exchanging the keys?
I'm not too proud to admit that it's a pretty big deal for me, I'm looking forward to immensely. I'm not expecting smoke, lasers and a marching band or anything but something other than mere formalities seems in order. A silk sheet cover pulled off or something like that.
Anyone want to share their experience of new car collection?

I'd be in the same boat as you, unsure what will happen and worried and excited all at the same time. Like you, I've never owned an absolutly brand new car.I'm not too proud to admit that it's a pretty big deal for me, I'm looking forward to immensely. I think the answer depends on the dealer. My (wealthy) very hard working mate bought himself for his 40th a few years back an almost brand new 911 Cab, I think it was three months old and cost a very pretty penny.
He walked into the dealer on the pre-arranged day to collect, and they basically hadn't time to deal with him. It was a matter of handing him the keys, sign the paperwork and pointing him towards where it was parked outside.
He'd taken his whole family along, wife three kids and mum and dad, he had his picture taken along side the car, it was supposed to have included the salesman handing over the keys, but he was just to busy.
He never told me about it untill years later, and was quietly still quite bitter.
Best of luck with the new motor and I'm sure the above will not happen to you, if it does though, don't take it to personally. I wouldn't be able to sleep waiting

You may get a 'silk sheet cover' but I doubt you'll get 'pulled off'
No but you'll get your trousers pulled down. It really depends on the dealership. I've had bows tied around the car, freebie cleaning kits and even a bunch of flowers. Others, as has already been said, will hardly give you the time of day.
What to expect? Not a lot really, especially if you've declined their GAP insurance and Paint Protection hard sell. You will have already had a severe spanking over your p/ex offer so collecting a new Porsche leaves a rather nasty feeling.
Take your time to inspect the car closely, especially for dents and paint defects and windscreen chips which they will blame you for even if you come back 5 minutes later. Once you've signed the acceptance form, you are on your own.
In spite of all of that, take the time to enjoy your new car, go out into the country for lunch somewhere and have fun. I would always recommend staying well back from traffic in front for the first few weeks to avoid stone chips, even though they may claim the paint is fully hardened by the time you collect.

Don't listen to them, I've done it a few times now and it will feel very special, make the most of it and allow yourself plenty of time. Hello OP, will msg you on Fb later! You know who I am!
Have done it three times, all very good and at three different OPC's. Two new cars, one used.
Norwich now shut, Leicester and Portsmouth.
Each time car in roped off area of showroom, not covered but nicely prepared with a stand next to it with with my name and car details. Look round car, then coffee and paperwork, few photos, showroom doors opened, quick run through of controls, fire her up and drive out the showroom. They then email pics afterwards, people knock OPC's but have always had really good service, apart from Bournemouth, wouldn't pee on that place if it was on fire!
Enjoy it, will be a special day, you have chosen a lovely spec!

I've done it twice, with two different dealers, and both times it was a fabulous day.
Cars presented beautifully, made to feel special, everything explained in great detail, follow up emails, phone calls and texts, a nice gift - boot liner for one and wine hamper for another, Experience Day at Silverstone. I would be suprised if this isn't typical of the experience because Porsche are very active in following up for you to rate the service. Both times I have also had it stated that if, when I got the car home, and found anything that I wasn't happy with, then they would sort it. Have not had to test that out!
As the the value for money of buying new I have found that they will bend over backwards to secure your busininess and on both Porsche purchases I have felt that I have got maximum value.
Have a great day and enjoy your purchase.

I use my local centre and after *cough I'm old* years I always get the 'full service'. All the way from test drive, specifying, negotiating (lubed and ready Sir), through to picking it up and the realisation of having to pay for the damn thing, I'm well looked after. I think I know the guys at Silverstone by name and makes my daily pressures worth it. The 'how much did you get off it and did I get a free keyring' is important but when it catches fire, I like to know that I have some one to talk to that is going to listen to me.

Clearly I have chosen the wrong OPCs for my deals. Nothing more than a coffee and a biscuit for my troubles...... Oh and the cars of course.
I think the OP had it right - 'It's a special day but not that special'.You're buying a car after all, you're not buying a cosy chat over a coffee and biscuits. Maybe some people take their Life Coaches with them to check they're doing the right thing because they can't make up their own minds.
It IS a special purchase, but it needs to be in proportion. Hope you have a good day when it arrives Grant.
Collected my new Boxster 2.7 from OPC Silverstone last September.
Great day, nice and sunny, everything as expected. Car was presented in perfect condition and I did look hard.
The paperwork side took longer than I thought but the warranty and loan docs clearly explained. In all I was there about 2 hours.
Then I fire up the flat-6 and gently drive it out the showroom.
Something that made it special for me was the car had a full tank of fuel, first time this has happened in 14 new car collections
