Any advice out there as to where I might find a decent 944 S2. I have made my mind up that this is the model for me.
I have up to 6k to spend, maybe a little more if the car warrented it.
Am i being realstic as to be able to get one for this money, as I have viewed numerous vehicles around this price mark and they all seem to have 'little stories' behind them.
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

just keep looking until you find the right car, it will turn up!, though I appreciate it can be a tad depressing turning up to view a shed on the strength of a great advert

The £6k 944S2 in good order with full unblemished history is now almost extinct. I have not seen any for a while now.
Age is not the issue originality, condition & history is king and they seem to be retailing at around £7k+ for 120,000miles+
and up to £9k for 90,000miles or less.
Good one's will always be in demand, so prices will reflect this but there are always exceptions when someone selling does not appreciate what they have and a bargain can occasionally be had. Keep looking.

A bit of both really. Most sellers use dealers as a guide of where to pitch their cars. There are now less independant Porsche dealers still selling 944's to compare with and my experience is that we specialists usually choose only the very best and the remainder finds it's way onto eBay or other forecourts, Autotrader etc.
Most sellers usually aim it at around £750 behind a dealer and as we all know [not a cynic me] everyone thinks their own car is immaculate, especially when selling.
I have sold nice '92 S2's at £8k but fantastic '89 S2's at £7.5k others have realised much higher prices but inevitably no 2 cars are the same.
If you have enough patience and enough knowledge a £6k 944 S2 that has been loved and looked after will eventually come along but do not get hung up on colour or trim. A great Alpine White car with Blue/Silver pinstripe is much better than a doggy metallic blue or silver with leather. Never worry about 030 susp or air con they are usually last legs by now.
Happy hunting

For what its worth I just spent the last 3 months looking for a decent S2, having read in the Porsche mags you can get them for under 6K. VERY difficult.
In the end I plumped for an 87 Turbo (220bhp). In one way I think I was lucky - 5740 for a 55K car. But then... the bill to do service, belts, engine mounts, blowing exhaust manifold, clutch master cylinder came £1100!
If I were you I'd take your time, but be very fast when you see one. The good deals go quick, and like has been said, don't worry about the trim.
And no matter what you buy ... have a grand spare to sort out the niggles.
Oh yes... and once you've driven a couple, ask LOTS of questions on the phone and if you don't feel really good about it, don't bother.
