Driving EGTE's 996.2 Carrera 2
Discussion
So glad you enjoyed it, CMoose ( was worried!) and I hope your passionate, detailed and great write-up (again!) goes a little way to encouraging more Porsche enthusiasts to not dismiss the 996 C2 as anything other than a great 911 - for a bargain price.
Was a great day; hopefully one of many that this truly great car will bring.

Interesting and comprehensive review
Regarding the 'rear-weight' comments above...
I have a mk1 996 (2WD, manual).
My broader experience is admittedly limited (I've never driven a 991 or 993, have only limited time in a couple of earlier models, and have only passengered in a 997 GT3.1), but I think the 996 has the perfect rear weight balance for a day to day 911.
You can drive it very quickly (fast, but below instant license losing territory), and the weight distribution is never a concern - which is great when your wife drives (fairly quickly!!) it in all weathers. But if you really want to drive it, and you want to use the weight, it's always there to help you make the car do what you want to.
I'd love to spend more time in other variants, but I still love driving my 996, even after 7 years (4.5 of those as my daily) and almost 100,000 miles. Would it be enough as a pure weekend toy? Probably not. But the balance of non-flashy, safe, practical, reasonably comfortable, everyday use-ability, with proper drivers car rewards when you want them, makes it perfect for my needs (and wallet!).
It would remain my daily even if I had a lottery win... though it would be heavily modified, and would have a CGT and Singer for company.
Another good write up Jeremy,I enjoyed that.
I'm picking up my fully sorted, fresh from a major service and PPI 996 C4S from 911 Virgin next Saturday if you fancy doing a review?
Always an interesting read and good to make comparisons.
.
I really like the 996 hence my purchase and I agree the interior really just works

That was an excellent read, thank-you for taking the time and trouble to write it. I will have to experience a 996 soon, I remember my dad's old 986 S having better steering feed-back than my new 981 GTS. I am having naughty thoughts about adding one to the fleet when I have paid off the Boxster!

Great write. Most enjoyable. I agree the aerokit completely ruins the silhouette on the mk 2 996 and I'd be tempted to return the car to standard. Funnily enough I like the mk1 aerokit. Go figure?
That's actually the mk1 and mk2 Aerokit Carrera (It can be fitted to both)The Aerokit that is specific to the mk1 is the Aerokit Cup (sometimes known as the GT3 kit).
And just to confuse maters further, there is also an Aerokit Cup for the mk2 Carrera that mimics the 996.2 GT2 (with the ironing board wing), but I've only ever seen it on two mk2 Carrera's.
