100 Octane Fuel
Discussion
Remember that the yanks measure the octane rating differently.
They usually sell unleaded outside of California in 87, 89, and 91 octane.
I believe their 89 is around the same as our 95, which would make their 91 around the same as our 98 (i think).
So is your 100-103 ours or theirs?

Good Question..
I Think it is our rating. The ecu upgrade is a Giac Chipswitch and according there website the race program should be run on 100-103 octane but they do not state UK or USA ratings.I know the USA rate there fuel in CLC or AKI and 93 CLC is equal too 98 Ron.
The car goes like stink on the new pump program but since ive got the race program aswell curiosity is eating me up.

You will find it difficult to get access to 100+ octane fuel here in the UK.
Optimax is 98, Tesco sell 99 I believe.
When I ran my modified Scooby I ran it on Optimax plus Octane Booster (+2bhp) so 100Ron. To get to 102 or 103 Ron would require serious booster & I would shy away from putting any form of Octance Booster in a 996TT without 110% completely happy/educted as to the potential problems it might cause longer term.

We use RON as a measure of octane. In the US, octane is the mean of MON and RON. Their 90 octane regular is 95 RON, 85 MON.
Beware of octane improvers, their effect is not linear. depends on the components in the blend and really tails off at higher octanes.
Hope this helps.
If you really want to sort out your octane, buy some toluene, its about 125 RON!
In the old days of mega boost rally cars all the teams used vast amounts of toluene, as a degreser of course.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I found this site www.aaoil.co.uk/frameset.cfm (then clic on products then race fuel) but the prices range from $75 odd to £230 odd per 25 litres.
What i need to knoe now is which one should i use? I was thinking maybe 1/2 tank of optimax and 1/2 tank 103 ron should level out to just over the 100 Ron mark.

both my heavily modified scumbaru and s4 love tesco's 99 octane. when running the scum on track a bottle of octane booster per tank should take it to 102 for £4 and drive like a scalded cat. whatever the octane it absolutely loves it and boosts like mad, even under sustained abuse the knock link sensors dont make a peep (not true with cr@p like esso 'supreme') also much cheaper than race fuel.
bear in mind that the octane level drops if the petrol is left to sit for a while. in other words 98 octane optimax from a busy shell garage is likely to be higher octane than '100' from a race track whose tank is 3 months old. or so im told.

Adding octane booster to Optimax and Tesco 99 will not achieve much and certainly not 102 RON.
As said earlier, the effect is not linear and these fuels are 95 with their own enhancers. This why the price is close to 95, as they avoid SUL rates of duty.
Millers is a manganese compound and leaves quite a bit of manganese oxide powder on the internals. Turbo blades and O2 sensors get quite a build up. MBTE and Toluene based boosters are by far the best.

like i said dont know the final octane but booster certainly does make a difference, a very marked difference to esso `supreme` and bp `ultimate` less so optimax/tesco's. i spent the summer playing around with different maps in the s4 and generally abusing the scum wired up with knock sensors. some esso and bp super was so bad the ecu shut the turbos down completely, half a tank of optimax on top or a bottle of octane booster got them working again. those are my experiences anyway. with the s4 now running a much less agressive map, it'll run on anything but i only use optimax now.

Shell Optimax = 98
Millers Octane Boost = 4
1 bottle Millers into tank of Optimax = 102 Octane
AND - much cheaper than full race fuel, like the stuff from 76 Oils
10:1 regular 95 RON unleaded to toluene = 110 RON IIRC!!!
Much better and cheaper than octane booster

Don't spend too much time near the exhaust though - toluene is highly carcinogenic...

You've got that right Homeboy. The bloody stuff makes you Anaemic...
Which is why we had to wear surgical gloves and a mask when filling the tanks of the TVR Tuscan racers!!! Long time ago now though, there's no cheating in motorsport any more...
Adding octane boosters to pump fuel will do for a one-off. The proportion required will probably be quite high, but will depend on the base fuel and booster that you use. As an aside, within the context of the chemicals and components to be found in gasoline, toluene isn't that bad from a h&s perspective (perhaps being confused with benzene, another aromatic, which has proven and well documented issues).
If you feel like ordering a finished fuel, for delivery to the door, then I understand that Anglo American do a range of candidates (remember to specify unleaded, if you're still running a cat). For best performance, I'm sure they'll advise mapping the engine to the specific fuel on trial.
Good luck!

You can still get leaded at some places
not good for cats though...
