993 C2 at Gmund - views on price please!
Discussion
Gmund have a rather nice looking 993 in stock:
www.gmundcars.com/cars/532/993carrera2.html
Looks good from the photos, although I know it's always hard to tell until you can get a proper look close up. The fact that it already has the 18" Carrera rims, aftermarket suspension, exhaust and a re-map to up the power also appeal.
(They have an even lovelier Targa too - but just that bit too rich for my blood at a few p below £30K)
It's more than I would ideally want to spend, but just about do-able if I stretch myself a bit. I'm well aware of the mantra to buy on condition and not mileage. The 90K miles doesn't put me off in itself but I do wonder whether the price is a bit high bearing them in mind? I know the after-market mods put it at above market value for a car of that age and mileage, but what do you guys think? Is the price realistic?
A run up to North Yorks might be in order this weekend....

IMHO after-market mods do not (or should not) add significantly to the value of a car, mainly because they reflect a very personal choice on the part of the past owner, which may not be at all desireable for the next. I very much doubt if any of the dealers here would offer you significantly more for a car because it had after-market mods. (whether or not they subsequntly do add to the price because of them is another matter...

That's also generally the rule with my current car, the S2000 - over on the owners club board where I moderate, the advice given to selling owners is always to remove as many mods as possible (a) because a lot of buyers prefer to buy in stock condition and (b) because you can frequently get more by selling them separately rather than leaving them on.
So, on that basis, leaving the modifications to one side, is £27K a reasonable asking price for (what appears to be) a good condition 94M 993 with 90K miles? Seems high to me, but I don't really have a feel for how much of a premium a FSH and good condition will command.

seems about right to me, if in as good a condition as claimed. have a look at www.911virgin.com - theyve got 5-6 993s. the glass roof targas command a premium and there are three there at 29-31K, the 4S similarly, plus two cabs at 25-27 and at least one very similar to the one youre looking at for exactly the same money. if youre looking to spend a bit less then you may have to look at a 996 !!!
henry's black 993, similar spec, M reg, why dont you ring him and ask him the mileage so you can compare. go on, i dare you!

I'm a Porker n00b, but not THAT much of a n00b!
I check Henry's stocklist every few days, so the ones you mention are on the radar... His two Targas are nice but beyond my budget.
Think I'm just going to have to sit tight and try to flog the S2000 privately - the cost to change is just too much based on the p/x prices I'm being quoted

Woo hoo! I've provisionally sold the S2000 and at a rather better price than I would have got in p/x.
So, crossing all fingers and toes that it turns into a concrete sale, let the Porker hunt commence in earnest!
(Sod's law that I had posted a £500 reduction in price in my ad on the S2000 owners website just 30 minutes before I got the PM from the prospective buyer - and his contact was nothing to do with it having come down in price
)

)In answer to your original question. The price is about right perhaps a bit high. The suspension mods are well worth having. The rest are nice but don't really make the car worth any more.
Remember the price on the ticket is not the price you necessarily pay. Most things in life are negotiable.
Superb colour.
Worth checking out IMO.

I agree about the colour. I started off thinking I'd end up with a dark blue one (my last three cars have all been various shades of metallic blue) but Polar Silver has really grown on me. I think it really suits the car.
I think I might go and have a look at it at the weekend, weather permitting.
LL, don't particularly want to dampen your parade, but a '94 is not approved for 18" retrofit, whether the steering rack brace is fitted or no. Not to say that many 94s 95s are not fitted thus and quite OK, but 'factory says no !'
see www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=174129
If you can't get there PM me I'll send the TSB. Negotiating point if nothing else .. 'do you know that car you're selling is ....(insert inflammatory text here)...' !!
cheers, Maurice (993 Register Secretary)

OK, I've read the TSB linked over at the PCGB forum. Thanks Maurice.
Ajit, did you fit the 18s not realising that they were not recommended? When you say it ruined the feel, is that because they're not suitable for the earlier 993s or just because they lack the feel of the OEM 17s? If the latter, I assume that the same would be true of any 993 with 18s rather than just those not suited for larger rims?
What are the implications of running 18s on a car that isn't deemed compatible with them?
Ironic really - the one thing that made that particular car stand out and grab my attention was the non-standard rims. It may be mildly heretical but the standard 17" Cups look a bit, well, weedy (for want of a better word).

LL - I knew they weren't recomended. In fact, I had a different set of 18s which so ruined the feel of the car as they were heavy that i had got rid of them and went back to 17s for a couple of yrs.
I did put the brace on - but TBH its a weedy bit of metal.
In the end, i wanted the looks but got annoyed again with the feel.
Plenty of people run 18s on the cars when they're not suitable. I don't think they help the steering rack - i already had one replacement (refurb'd one) and it wasn't cheap (circa £1k all in i think).
When i say it ruined feel, I just felt the car rode, drove and felt a lot better and was more delicate on the 17s (and this from someone who doesnt mind a harsh ride, my GT3 is not overly harsh for me). Guess it was designed for them! If i had a 993 again, and if it was pre vram and not listed as suitablefor 18s, i'd run it on 17s - they are very light too. Not driven a vram one approved for 18s in anger so can't comment.
Not sure about the technical downsides, perhaps the rack is one of them. Maybe the body/other components of the later cars were such that Porsche deemed 18s suitable. Perhaps Maurice knows?
Cheers

Hmmmm. How long ago was that done, Ajit? if the rims WERE a factor in it requiring replacement, I suppose it's not inconceivable that it might require attention again in the not too distant future. Anyone of a technical bent like to comment?
As much as I like the look of the car, I wonder whether I should turn my attention elsewhere.
I must just have a thing about non-standard large rims. One of the other 993s I looked at, a 95 M at Shirley's Garage, had 18" Turbo alloys. I guess the same compatability issue will affect that too.
www.shirleys-garage.co.uk/Car_Photos/060212.jpg
It was in late 2000 that i had the rack done - was a dilema, brand new they're really costly. Refurb'd was half the price but they didnt guarantee them, could be unlucky and it goes in 3 months. I opted for the refurb and it was fine.
On 17s, that 993 was a lovely lovely car.
If i was looking now, i'd want a vram car, preferably an S (gotta love that rear end).
Mileage would be an issue for me - people get a mental block when a car gets to 100k - and beleive me, no matter how much (When selling a car) dealers may say how little mileage matters, it bloody well will matter big time when you come to sell it back.

Care needed here with insurance.
If you stuff it and the insurers find non-approved wheel size then that = potentially no insurance.
Please be careful - don't give them an excuse.
I had a client who had a £30k claim refused on the basis of non declared (minor) bodywork changes (skirts and a pair of wing mirrors) and a fat exhaust so tread very carfully here.
If they send an inspector to a claim they will try to screw you.
