RWD with 500hp?
Discussion
I am trying to compare the handeling differences between RWD and 4WD porsche 911's.
I am going to get either a rwd or 4wd 993 cab with plans on droping in a modified twin turbo with a max of maybe 550hp. What are your thoughts on how a rwd car would handle the power? I know that the 4wd would be better in the wet, and more forgiving if you do something wrong, but I would rather stay with rwd if the car can handle it.
Most driving will be done in the dry, some track time.

Sorry if this appears rude but why don't you find the car you want & buy it, or do you just happen to have a 500 bhp 993 engine lying around waiting to be used?
Vic Cohen's 993 GT3 is for sale, not a cab (so sorry) but that does have just over your target BHP -only £114k to you guv.

Hi Guys,
Sorry to dispell all the non believers, but yes I did have a turbo bodied 993 carrera 2 cab. Car was initally accident damaged from Germany and then built to turbo bodied spec. Originally ran it on standard 3.6 motor, but then installed a 550HP GT2 motor. Chassis was obviously beefed up to cope with the extra power. Performance was awesome, even quicker than my current Lambo, but not as much of an event.
Andy.

Erm...... (in true Monty Python Franglais accent) We have already got one.
We built it for a customer last year from a narrow bodied 993C4 Cab mit single turbo 3.6 engine on Motec with around 540bhp & 700Nm at 1.0 bar boost, currently in the 9m skunk works for more fettling and fine tuning.

Thanks for the info guys.
cummingsa - how did your car handle? Were the rear tires always breaking away? I also plan on a wide body conversion, so I will have the same rear track as the turbo (maybe wider) which will help plant the power, right?
As for why, they never made a 993 turbo cab. And I want a cab. I know the cab flexes more, but much of that can be eliminated. Stiff roll bars, sturt braces, ect...
The car will have a removable rear roll cage, and I am hoping I can come up with removable full cage that will bolt onto the rear cage and provide more front to back stifness.
There will also be a carbon fiber roof for serious track days which will stiffen it up some as well.
No spinners, or flashy crap - just a lightweight, customized, road/track cab with a whole bunch of horsepower. I don't know why everyone hates cabs so much.

its the shell that flexes more. stiffer roll bars won't change the strength of the shell, infact they'l just exert higher forces on, and make the shell flex more. strut brace will only strengthen shell between the struts, not where its been weakened by cutting the roof off. as far as i know the only effective way to strengthen a cab is reinforcement, usually through the sills
Mike,
Thanks for posting the pics. In response to the other questions in the dry the car had awesome grip although you could light the rears up very easily in 1st,2nd, 3rd. In the wet it was real handful. The turbo cab does look the bizness and I still miss mine even though I've got a Lambo now!! Let me know how you get on with the build. To properly strentghen the chassis to minimise flex you basically have to double skin the entire floor and triple plate the inner sills and A Post joints. Mine had very little flex at all with all the added metal we put in.
All the best
Andy.

As for handling, the power really isn't a problem except in the wet, when too much right foot can induce some delicious 4 wheel drifts......The only chassis change was the addition of a strut brace, but the H&R suspension up-grade with turbo brakes seems to handle it all very well.
