Paintwork. How do you get the best finish on your Porsche?
Discussion
I was watching Fifth Gear on channel 5 this evening and some guy was cleaning and buffing up exotic cars for upto 5 grand a piece. That's just for a clean and wax! No ordinary clean and wax, mind you. The 5 grand affair was a 2 day 68 stage process. He used Zymol, from vertar.com, (and before you ask, this is no ad), and got the most spectacular finish from what I could see.
I have and do use zymol on my motor, which is basalt black, and can never get rid of the swirl marks. I follow the process vertar put in their instructions, cleaning, drying, cocoa buttering, etc. I wax using my bare hands in the local OPC service on a saturday afternoon (thanks to them!) and buff after the right drying period. And... swirl marks. Its no different than £5.99 tub of Turtle wax.
What am I doing wrong? Should I sand my hands down prior to application? Do I need to get the service area at the precise tempreture? Should I lick the car clean?
Help.

I can't get into cleaning cars. Drives me nuts, but there are a few very detailed forums/websites with lots of technique info if thats your thing. I don't know their names off hand but I'm sure a bit of carefully googling will find them for you.
There is a whole world of orbital polishers etc to discover

www.polishedbliss.co.uk/ for products
www.detailingworld.co.uk/ for advice
On mine I washed (using 2 buckets and wash mitt), clay bar, cleanser, megs #7 glaze, poorboys nutty wax, then as many layers of Optium car wax (OCW) as you have time for.
White is a very hard colour to really get a great result from. I tried swissol but found that gave to much depth to the colour. Megs NXT gave better results, but didn't stay on very long. Poor Boys wax was then the best comprimise between shine and longitivity.
I will also be trying some Blackfire products shortly.
The single thing that impressed me the most was the clay bar. If your car has never had a clay bar treatment I highly recommened it.
This easter I got bored and waxed underneath my car, also got cotton buds and cleaned inside the petrol cap, and inside the door hinges. Kept me busy for a while

You dont need to pay out for the expensive waxes, with time and knowledge you can get the same results.

Do you keep your wedding ring on by any chance?
only joking
but I think the route to zero swirl is an orbital polisher in VERY experienced hands.andrew medway said:
