Amazing to think that the turbo for example was £95K + back in 1995. Those were the days when 95K would buy you a large house. Goes to show how much cheaper in real terms the porkers have become.
Mind you, they were better put together back then and it was almost unknown for owners to suffer the sort of problems that seem to be endemic to a lot of 996s. Equally, before the arrival of 996, Porsche 911 residuals were ridiculously good. I lost about 3 and a half grand on my 993 Targa over 15 months. I bought my first one new in Jan '97 for just shy of 65k, and sold it with about 15,000 miles on the clock for over 61k in April '98. These sort of residuals weren't exactly freakish, either. Also, on long runs, I used to be able to tease about 38 mpg out of my 993 just to wind up my Dad, who believed you couldn't have your cake and eat it.
The new cars are cheaper, but they're much more expensive to run IMO.
Which doesn't mean I don't like the new ones, btw. I think the 997 is a fabulous car (though a little bit of an over-complicated fatty), and the 996 is brilliant in Turbo and GT3 guise (the rest of the range always felt a bit underdeveloped).
