Just brilliant. But what is it for???
Discussion
Test drove a Cayenne today. Its my loaner whilst they service my Boxster S.
Its beautiful inside. Nice to drive - if a bit gutless in the the V6 version one I have. Seats are super-comfy, satnav seems to work. Air suspension seems to do its thing rather well. My colleagues all agreed it was really nice to travel in. Shame its so thirsty.
All in all a brilliant car - in point of fact.
The only thing I can't quite get my head around - is what exactly is it for. What is it that it does that is the superlative thing that means you simply must buy a Cayenne?
Its faaaar too nice to go tearing up muddy fields in. And you wouldn't want to get mud on the lovely carpet. And it costs 45 thousand of your English pounds. So its not for going seriously off-road with...despite the fact it could do it brilliantly well I'm sure.
Once on road - which it does brilliantly well for a two tonne truck - it is absolutely fine but there are "cars" for doing that sort of thing in. Which go faster. And use less fuel.
I'm sure its an excellent fashion statement. But that does nothing for me. I bought my Porsche to drive and I simply don't care who sees me in it. Which is just as well as when I get out the reality is that I am fat. And ugly.
I just don't "get" it - despite the fact that I would happily own a 4x4. For driving. On muddy tracks and up byways. Just to annoy the green-meanies if nothing else.
Ah well. Those of you enjoying your Cayennes - good luck to you. The car is quite obviously marvellous. I just don't need one.

Have had this debate with my bro who had a Cayenne (but tok it back in exchange for a 996tt). All these arguments came back with the response of "... ah, but it could do those things, and do them much better than any other car..". I never quite saw the point really. Bit like Finland - must be good for something, but you don't really want to find out.

Erm... Cheeky f*ck!! I'm originally from Finland.
PS - Also remember that the Boxster is assembled in Finland - not sure if that's a good thing..

Dont worry, he probably has a Nokia mobile

I beg to differ. I got a manual V6 loaner from my OPC for a few days, and it was absolutely shocking. An utter gutless wonder, sitting in traffic changing gear 1st, 2nd, 3rd,2nd,1st,2d,1st ad infinitum as the car has no power at all.
Then I tried parking it in an underground car-park.....it is so massive I had to take corners like a bus, and the damn park sensors were bleeping incessantly.
When I checked out the storage in the boot, I saw a couple of cubby holes with handles....I pulled at one, expecting it to hinge forward...but it just completely pulled out in my hand...the other was the same....
I went to close the rear glass hatch, and it wouldn't close properly no matter how hard I tried and kept getting warning lights....
I couldn't wait to return it and get my 911 back.....the service manager expected me to say it was amazing and was surprised when I said it was tosh.....

When I handed it back I was utterly delighted to be given the keys back to my car.
Know what you mean about its sheer size. I didn't take it anywhere it was a problem, though.
There again: I just don't need the sort of vehicle that is an "automotive headbutt".
Box: "Hey, baby."
Cayenne: "Did you spill my oil?"

I think the V6 is suited to people who want the space without the pace. Drive a 4.5 or a turbo and it all starts to make sense. A much more flowing car that isn`t struggling all the time, very relaxed. As for the reason d`etre, try putting all your lifestyle clobber for mum dad and a sprog or two in a 911. It doesn`t fit.
The 911 is a peach, always has been, always will be and I`ll never be without one (or two), but if someone can only have one car that does everything then the Cayenne hit`s the spot if you have a family. It also has the added advantage of being able to be worked for a living, it`s possibly the finest tow vehicle in the world !

Henry, agree with all the above but what does a Cayenne S do that a BMW 5 Touring, E class wagon, or Audi A6 Avant can't do, apart from go off-road (which 98% of Cayenne's will never do anyway)???
What does a 5 Touring, E Class Wagon do that a Cayenne can't do? The Cayenne is just a car with four wheel drive (like many others) which happens to be a bit higher off the ground. Its footprint, like many 4*4s, is no greater than many estate cars, but it gives a better view of the road. I can't quite understand what people have against vehicles whose only difference seems to be that they are higher off the ground. (VS, I'm not saying you're against them, but I'm commenting on the general atmosphere in this country against 4*4s which seems to have driven by left-leaning organisations.)

and are easily able to retrieve a boat from a slipway through soft sand (they are not called slipway for nothing) not to mention they have superb off-road ability something that gets tested a lot with my friends as to access the flying field we have to negotiate several Farm Fields and Ditched crossings.
A very competent tool, whether it is rudimentary mud-plugging or pulling your 20 foot boat out of the water... after that you can hurtle down the Motorway in excellent safety and stability.
These cars are too often dismissed by people who obviously do not require this of a vehicle - the same crowd are too narrow-minded possibly to see that given the parameters that my friend had for his needs of a car... there was not actually that much to choose from.

Buy a VW Tourag (Spelling??) and spend the difference on a second hand Boxster/ 911/ 968CS etc
Had much experience of VW customer service in the UK have you? - Not really an option in my opinion on those grounds alone. Not to mention the Power advantage of the V8 Cayenne and better handling.
