M6 TONIGHT - 993 burned out

Hope it was no one here - arena red (?) 993 on the hard shoulder burned to a cinder.

I know two people who have Arena red 993's. Which part of the M6 was it? Was there any part of the number plate visible?

One must assume the wiring loom callback wasn't carried out.......

This could have been me. I bought my 993 about 2 years ago. I knew of the loom recall so checked with my local OPC who confirmed, after checking, that the loom had been done. A month ago the electrics went mad, all the warning were ights were on when the ignition was off and the engine would not turn off on the ignition, had to stall it to stop it. I took it into J Z Machtech who too one look at the engine and said the loom recall had not been carried out. They took it to the OPC who eventually agreed with them and they carried out the work.
Moral; don't trust Porsche records!!!!

I've read about the loom problem and the recall but can immediately remember whether it's one that affects all 993s, or whether it's limited to cars of a certain age. Anyone....?

A dying shame for a car like that to end up burned out on the hard shoulder

Can't recall when junction. It was dark, so details difficult to see. It had 18 turbo twists though if that helps?

Only ceratin chassis numbers and they tend to be early ones , its the covering on a part of the loom ,plastic material dries out, if bad news feels brittle when u squeeze it , part and not too long to fix .......................

Email your OPC with the chassis number anmd they will be abl e to clarify for you. I have a 96 on "N" plate and I was smug in the knowledge that it didn't need it until the OPC confirmed otherwise. The work is FOC and takes about a day. As always it is a good opportunity to oggle the receptionist and drink frothy coffee.

My 96 N didn't need it - just confirmed with the OPC to be sure.

It's an engine out job so perfect opportunity for a new clutch if yours is old...

Not sure abt that Peter , certainly on RS was nt engine out , approx half a loom 2 hours ............

It may help 993 owners to know that the campaign number or recall number for this is W301. I have a stamp in the back of my service book that indicates this and I've literally just verified this with Porsche Centre Swindon. I did try Reading, but some reason they were unable to find my chassis number on the computer system...although Swindon were OK with it and verified the recall. So if you have an early model then look at the back of the service book for a stamp and W301.

Yes, we could be jumping to conclusions, but we have at least enlightened or reminded 993 owners of a wiring loom recall that could and has caused similar. It's certainly done it for me, I've just verified mine.

ohhh thats interesting, because i was on the M6 yesterday (admittedly a bit earlier) and i saw a 993 like that absolutely flying through the traffic, weaving through everyone! i wonder...

Cant be who i was thinking of because they are in sixth gear by 30mph and think they're pushing it at 4000rpm!!
