450bhp safe on standard 993tt?
Discussion
I was wondering what owners thought about the long term sensibility of remapping a standard 993tt to 450bhp?
She's completely standard apart from carpgraphic mufflers.
I've been speaking to the 'Wizard' Wayne Schofield and I feel reasonably confident the base engine would be ok.
Aparently 450bhp would include moving maximum boost up to around .95bar.
My specific questions are:
Would this affect long term engine longevity?
Is that boost ok? - (I only use v-power).
Should I consider an extra oil cooler - I may do 3 or 4 track days a year plus a jaunt in to Europe.
Should I have it mapped to 430bhp instead - presumably that would be lower boost?
My concerns are:
I love the standard car so I don't want to do anything that may compromise longevity.
.95 bar seems high - does anyone know if porsches own ecu's ever use that much boost?
I don't want the driving experience to change much - though I'm keen to tweek her so I know she's got that little bit more than standard.
Thanks

Just had the Porsche 450 power kit installed on my car. Don't know what it's like yet because of an ECU issue that will be resolved this week.
However, my mechanic in Germany reckons that the standard motor is good for 550hp without any strengthening. Also, the 450 kit is OEM parts and was an option on the 993turbo when new.
The kit included an extra oil cooler.
What are your Cargraphic mufflers like, do they boom/drone?

Hi Kenny, i've got an RS Tuning stage 1 ECU for sale at just £600 - this will give 450bhp with the sport cats or a bit less without. Unfortunately I installed larger diameter cats which caused overboost in the higher gears. The car will outperform a factory 450 kit due to the RS programming.
if ur existing engine is sound i dont think theres anything like having it 'TAILOR MADE' and thats Waynes forte ...........problems with spiking[overboost] tend to come out when set ups dont all match and bits bolted on are nt suitable , theres a couple of others on here can tell u all abt that!

Bloody Hell it's Ace !!!
I was going to send a search party out looking for you !!!!!
You've been quiet ??
G.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try to answer some questions:
cargraphics - not actually fitted yet, getting fitted on friday - will report back.
Alan - I'm gonna use Wayne for the remap, though I have read how high quality the RS tuning ecu's are - thanks for the offer.
I've used Wayne several times on my previous 993 carrera's - he's a genius isn't he, I don't think there's anyone quite like him anywhere else? - possibly in the world.
As usual when listening to him you could tell he knows the 993tt engine inside out - what works, what doesn't, what the safety margins are etc.
Have any of you guys fitted the turbo S front oil cooler? - it looks good value from Gert and I think I might fit that before summer? - perhaps mainly for peace of mind.

Awesome power and torque and only uses 0.8bar to produce 448bhp, though does have a 1bar overboost function for overtaking (i.e. when you're above 4k and go from light throttle to full throttle) which provides almost 500lb/ft.
All this running K16's (standard), 100 cell cats and sports exhausts.
Ask me how i know :-)
I reckon you're probably pushing 0.95 bar for 450bhp because of the cat restriction...

I think the factory cooler is quite small and I struggle to understand how it adds much cooling given there's already a big cooler with a dedicated fan in front of the right wheel.
Have a look at the cost of other coolers like cargraphic and Ruf before you make a purchase.
Ace tracks his car and can give you an idea about oil temps on track days. I don't think you need one for road use unless you're doing sustained running at 120 mph plus at high temps. In traffic on a hot day is when my oil seems to get the hottest and that's mostly (IMHO) a function of reduced airflow from the oil cooler fan and the heat soak from the road onto the engine as opposed to the greater flow from when moving. An extra oil cooler without a fan won't do much to change that.
I'm not sure how you'll get 450 bhp from stock K16's without going above 1 bar boost...

wow this is better than rennlist! - and all pertinent to the uk, thanks chaps.
replied to your PM Martyn - cheers.
Just got off the phone with Alan too......bloody hell I don't know what sort of world I'm getting in to here but it's all big hp and big £!! scary.

Does he use his own dyno - or go to 9M?
his own purpose built, fully sound proofed and ventilated dyno - designed himself aparently.
See 993 thread on pcgb forum for more info John - think the thread is 'dyno the results' or similar, updated recently.
If it is a chassis dyno then it is not "purpose built" for mapping a 993tt engine, for that you need a dyno which can hold the engine under load at fixed rpm whilst the optimum settings are dialled in, not a 10 second power run - things happen differently on the road depending on the load/temp/pressure conditions at the time of running. If they are different to those at the time of tuning then you may have problems.
The good news is you won't blow the thing up, the computer will just kill your timing and you will be back to your stock power or in the case of too high boost in colder conditions (high air mass) you may hit the built in ignition cut out.
If you are offered to bye pass the Motronic with fixed boost controller ask why Porsche didn't use one of these
Good luck
