996 facelift - differences?
Discussion
I'm sure this has been covered here before - but what are the primarty differences between '01 and '02 996 models?
are the '02 models a much better proposition? - they certainly seem to command quite a premium against similar pre-facelift models.
I certainly prefer the non-'is it a boxster?' front end look, and IIRC the 3.6 is better regarded for reliability - but are there any other key differences between pre & post facelift models?
and whats likely to happen to the respective values of say a leggy '02 car against a lower mileage pre-facelift over the next couple of years?
Cheers

Apart from the things you mention, I also recall (more will come to me later I'm sure):
* The buttons round audio were more matt coloured (were shint black).
* The handbrake button became silver as standard rather than black.
* Electric lid buttons replaced the silver pulley things in the door sills.
* Key fob allowed entry to boot.
* Sun visor style changed slightly (later one improved I'd say).
* PCM II replaced PCM I or was that 01 - 03 cars??
* 4-spoke steering wheel was standard and later upgraded to 3-spoke as standard.
* Alcantara roof lining rather than velour or again, was that later cars???
I'm trying to remember from the cars I've had so these are just the things I noticed, however, I'm sure there's someone out there who knows ALL the changes off by heart! LOL!
I'd say the difference in performance between the two models is noticeable (I thought the 3.4 felt like it ran out of puff). If performance is important to you (quite possibly), then getting the 3.4 might grate on you over time?? As for residuals, I think the 3.4's make really great buys.
Hope this helps anyway...

IIRC, the 996 underwent a pretty thorough going over when the 3.6 facelift was introduced. In addition to the visual changes there were quite a lot of quality improvements and I think the bodyshell strengthening and safety features were improved. There were also a few minor tweeks, including the suspension.
- different headlights and engine (as you've spotted)
- different front / rear bumpers
- later model has glovebox and drinks holders
- about £5K !
I spent a lot of time deliberating between the two, but a decent facelift model was quite a bit more £££, which - in a few years time - i think will decrease ... so more depreciation.
Not wanting to sound a total 911 nerd, but the electric/remote boot/bonnet controls that Victoria mentioned actually came in the 2001 model year (i.e last year of pre-facelift model). The facelift never had 4 spoke steering wheel at all (previously the 3 spoke was an option).
Peter Morgan's buying guide to the 996 is a good reference.

I had a 1999 car and that had the optional 3-spoke wheel. I've seen cars with 4-spoke...are you sure??
This 1999 car had the silver pulley things in the door sills to open both lids. The remote key fob didn't open the lids on the 1999 car, it did on later cars I had.
The other differences I recall ~ the centre console, bit round the audio and door sills was made from a rougher textured grey/back colour on the 1999 car. I actually preferred the grey/black. The black bit where the windscreen wipers fit into, this was slightly different too ~ it was more textured/grooved on the 1999 car than subsequent cars I had. Oh, the indicator stalks were less 'sticky' on the 1999 car (felt nicer I thought than later cars) and finally, when you flicked the stalks to indicate, the signal on the dials was different. Can't remember the exact difference but I remember noticing they WERE different.
All these differences are from memory so can't guarantee they are 100% accurate. Hope they help anyway...

That's right. From 97 to 01, the 4 spoke was std, 3 spoke was optional. The facelift that came in 2002 model year made the 3 spoke standard - no more ugly 4 spoke.
However the manual silver pulley things were fitted from 97 to 2000 model year. The 2001 model year (which is pre-facelift) had the electrical operation of buttons on the sill and remote keyfob - this continued into the facelift model of 2002.
I am in agreement that the facelift 996 was superior in every aspect to the non-facelift- I owned both pre and post facelift, with one small annoying detail.
The facelift cars moved the digital speedo from being in the rev-counter and large numerals to being located in the analogue speedo and much smaller digital numerals - bloody annoying it was as well. The 997 sees the Digital numerals back in the rev-counter thank goodness.

I read the "986/996 Market Report" article as published in "Excellence" last year on the loo the other day and it listed all the 996 facelift changes - some that I had not heard of before such as the imrpovements to the shell that gave a 25% increase in torsional rigitidity or what ever the measurement is.....
