Report: Mini-Cayenne Confirmed
Porsche to borrow Audi Q5 platform for baby SUV
If you thought that plans for a small Porsche mini-Cayenne had been shelved or were just rumours, think again – the baby Porker SUV is on its way apparently.
The Roxster (Geddit?! No neither do we…) will reportedly be based on the Audi Q5 architecture after much insider wrangling.
It was feared that the Porsche would steal sales from Audi but due to growing influence from the sports car manufacturer within VAG the project has apparently got the green light.
The Q5 is expected in 2008 and is thought to have been previewed with the Cross Coupe Quattro concept.
Expect the Roxster to arrive a year or two later.
The Roxster is rumoured to be taking the shape of a small coupe and will be around the same size as a BMW X3.
Discussion
Ok, now I may concede that Porsche are about to f
k their brand. I thought 'fair enough' with the Cayenne - at least that was intended to be a premium performance-oriented SUV. WTF is this??!!!
Lets not forget that outside the world of PH, image and badge cred count for a lot. I am willing to bet that people who buy a car for the way it drives are in the minority - how the hell else can you explain the number of Nissan Micras on the roads?
I have made the argument about the R8 - I don't care if it IS better than the 911...my key has the Porsche emblem on it, not Audi. THAT is what Porsche need to build on in. They certainly do not need to be introducing even cheaper models devaluing the brand. What next? A Porsche hot hatch in the £19-20k bracket?
UNLESS - this is all about balancing the range emissions....which I suspect very strongly it is.
EDIT - Mind you...I actually like that image above. :hide:

The Porsche brand is no longer 'performance', it's 'image' - it's about the only brand that can out-Audi Audi at the moment, and they're milking it for all they're worth. The bosses only care about the bottom-line, not about what existing customers think of the 'brand'...
