it has been for sale for ages. Surely there must be smthg not 100% right.
Mileage and specs look great. Price is not low, but ok-ish.
What's the catch?

In case there is smthg obvious, don't want to go there to check for myself for nothing as it is far away from home.

I guess the fact that its not been serviced for 5 years will put people off.

And how has it been 'stored'?

A full inspection would reveal.

The seller doesn't have a website - unusual for a prestige/specialist car dealer.

A quick google reveals this, which hardly inspires confidence.

actually, for me it is the fact that it is manual that makes it attractive.

I am sure someone in here went to see the car and there was something wrong about it.

If it skipped servicing 5 years but was carefully stored and everything was adressed once put back on the road (service etc..), then I would not worry too much.

I fear there may be something trickier than this...

I really don't want to lose my time going there to find out smthg obvious (like car was clocked, or engine pissing oil, or re-issue service book, of foreign car imported).

If I make the trip, it is with a strong view to buy it (getting it inspected beforehand of course).

exactly what I fear. Don't want a 300 miles rounds trip to find this kind of things.
Waiting for the chap on this board who went to see this particular car..

Yup

Manual in a coupe. "drivers car for open road and track"
Tip in a targa or cabriolet "cruising cars for every day town and occasional country lane use. Poor on track IMO"

I've got a manual 993 and it's a total pain for town use 90% of my driving is in town.

I could be way off here but the front number plate doesn't sit right to me - front end damage or just a replacement for MOT purposes?

Fair enough.

Have you driven a 993 Tip? I didn't really like it when I had a go in one.

In what way is it a pain?

I used a 993 to commute into the centre of London for 2 years, no issue at all. Its not like they have heavy clutches or anything

You might waste a few hundred quid, but have you considered getting a Porsche Indie in the Seller's area to do an inspection for you and if that gets the thumbs up, you could then view. A risk, as you might waste the inspection fee but you could speak to the Seller first & gauge his responses and also do an HPI. Mike at Sports & Classics is in Cheshire but I don't know if he would travel for you, the car might have to go to him. Just a thought.

I don't blame you at all. I had a tip Targa for the very same reasons. A manual 993 in London traffic is a pain in the...leg. All depends on your age of course. When I was 30 I was driving a manual big block Camaro into Soho every day.

Yes, I don't think I could do it nowadays. Is there no rush hour now?

Having said that, when I used to drive the Camaro into Soho, I would wait until ten o' clock in the morning to do so, and also until 8 at night to come home. Roads in and around London were pretty much free-flowing at those times. I also had a couple of 3.2 Carreras with very heavy clutches that I could hardly depress! I think I'd want a Lexus for London nowadays, preferably with someone else driving it.

My Griffith was the worst though. Absolute pig to drive.

Brother had a Charger, I took it into London a couple of times. Nightmare of a car. Driving a bus would have been easier. Auto trans but the steering wheel was enormous and the brakes didn't work. And it was only 12mpg. Thinking back, it was all very scary.

I think one may need to look a little deeper than the number plate!!!! smilewink
Of course you would. The point I'm making is that does such a small detail lead to looking deeper - had it had a front end? New front plate, fitted out of position.

993 Targa R34 EGJ

I went and saw it at Pistol Prestige in back street in Stockport, bunch of c$%^&@s didnt tell me any of the following on the phone, bar no proof of storage and it wasnt insurance damaged, car worth about £18k.

NO MOTs, no proof of storage! not insurance write off. Wasnt allowed to drive it after driving up from Oxford and not able to view in day light.

The car has had a n/s front wing and possibly partial front, PU was painted by them they owned up to that. Also bonnet painted over the stone chips top and bottom no label, scuttle painted, o/s door mirror painted and rear bumper painted over reversing damage that cracked bumper, some damage top o/s door and n/s window frame. Targa roof pop up front not working nor blind.

Biggest laugh was there was no sound deadening in any of the four footwells it had been replaced with some 1" thick l.blue foam, presume damaged and mouldy from being soaked for a long period of time ? I wonder if thats something to do with being "dry stored". O/S/R seat was completely loose and the area underneath was completely sodden.

Plus points engine looked clean, interior had hard backed seats and therefore theres a chance the mileage might be reasonable

that's what I thought.. oh dear.. Would certainly not be worth 18k of my money. Nice targas can be had for early 20's nowadays. This description suggests it's worth 10-12k tops.

I am well glad I did not bother going.

Had a similar experience with a different car recently which cost me a day off work, an inspection and petrol to get there. If people would advertise cars correctly would save everyone's time.
