R8 v8 coupe vs 991-
Discussion
Now i know this is the Porsche forum and the advice maybe slightly biased but i wondered what peoples thoughts were on R8 v8 vs 991 c2s. I currently have a 60 plate 997 c2s which i use as a weekend car, which i have owned for approx 6 months but ive got that "itchy feet" feeling and feel its time to move on. Ive driven both the R8 and the 991 and whilst the 991 was the better car to drive , I love the way the R8 looks. As its my weekend car I just thought that taking the R8 out at the weekend might be just that little bit more special. The deals offerred on both are quite good. R8 lists 102k but can be bought for 83k and the 991 c2s lists at 95k but have been offerred it for 85k. Im awaiting the flaming fron the Porsche diehards !!

Go for the r8 drop dead modern look . you dont see that many of them .Plus when you come to sell the r8 will get you more of your money back
Looks are very subjective. To me the R8 is one of the biggest hairdressers' cars lookwise. They might drive like nothing else on the plant but I could never ever own oneAt the end of the day it's just an Audi - yes it's the best you can get and I'm sure it is a great car! BUT - it's an Audi!!!
Is it going to feel that special after a year or so?
For that kind of crazy money you will be sitting in an Audi (I think that I have mentioned that it's an Audi). Think what other Porsche you can get if you go a year older - seriously have a think.
And I don't even own a Porsche :-)
What ever you decide it's nice to have that kind of money to spend on a weekend toy - enjoy!!

That kind of money for a r8 is silly IMHO. It's a 5yr old car, just mildly restyled. I would just buy slightly used v10 for that price... And that is what I wanted to do before buying the 991.
The Audi I drove (v8) felt very normal, not too powerful at all... Almost boring And inside had started to show its age... Old infotainment etc etc... Plus no rear seats at all and tiny boot. For euro trips it would be cramped. And for that is what it's all about. Use these cars on proper roads.
It still has a lot of wow factor though. Way more than a 911. Despite the "Audi" thing.
I say test drive properly both. Inside I think 911 wins. Outside... Well despite bigger tt looks the R8 is just iron man's ride...
Drive... Evo says r8 but I discount it.. Driving in real life is not driving sideways in Wales for 3 days with roads shut to the public...

Being an Audi is only a bad thing if you're a badge snob of if you choose a car based on image. Some people care more about the driving experience. Is it going to feel that special after a year or so?

Audi r8 is an excellent car and not slow by any stretch of the imagination. Much better than the Aston Martin V12V and not likely to throw you off a damp road while being driven hard. I have driven this quite a few times including the V10 which sounds out of this world - 8k+ rpm glorious . For me it's impractical not really a A to B car which can cart the family with me or go for a week away. But still special.
The Porsche 991 c2s cabin feels in a different class, the PSE sounds excellent, the handling much better, the ride on 20inch wheel unbelievable ... And with four seats.
Final nail in the coffin is explaining why it's not a Audi but an R8, no not an S8, no definitely not an A8 - it's a mid engined sports car not a rep mobile FFS ... Oh dear
If you can live with two seats, have a look at the 997 gt3 ... Much better than an Audi err R8 (sorry couldn't resist )

As a weekend toy a Gallardo would be in the frame as would a GT3 RS or a Ferrari 360CS or a 599.
R8's just look too much like the rest of the Audi range as it has that generic front end albeit slightly wider and flatter. imho just not special enough for a weekend car.
The 991 is fabulous but again not special enough for weekends but great as a daily driver.

Agreed. They looked great when they first launched but the design features have now made their way across the whole range - right down to the A1, and this just doesn't do it for me.
