Hi all,

Don't take this as a troll, it isn't, just looking for some advice for my first 911 purchase. I want a 911 and can go to mid £50k's for one. The car will be an occasional daily driver if that makes any sense. I have an old Fezza for the weekend fun so this would be mostly day-day type driving.

I've been considering a 2002+ C2 996 or a C2 997.

I've driven a 997 C2 and a 996 C4S in the past. I'm leaning towards the 997 (being honest) for it's looks, interior and build quality.

Question is, which is the better drive? Is the 997 worth the extra cash? Really want to hear from people have gone from 996 to 997.

I don't want to bring up the dreaded/perceived whatever RMS issue but is this less prevalent in the 997? Simple answer is fine. I will get a Porsche warranty no matter what.

Cheers,
LL

Hi,

I should have said definitely second hand. If I went 997 it would be a 2004.

Drove a 996 C2 today, impressed liked it a lot more than the C4S and Turbo I'd driven previously, just a lot more "alive" feeling. Plenty quick enough. They do feel a bit old inside that's true and the build quality isn't all that but a nice drive all the same.

Trying a 997 C2 tomorrow so will report back.

Well, most of you might think I'm a bit odd but I went and put down a deposit on a 51 reg 996 C2 today from an OPC. I drove one back to back with a 997 C2 and I just preferred the 996. OK it's not as pretty and not quite as quick but I like the way the car felt smaller, glove like and most of all the car felt a fair bit more alive at the helm than the 997.

I hate to say it but the 997 felt slightly dead and lifeless by comparison. I can understand why the older cars get more praise as I imagine the 993 vs 996 feels this way. The more modern cars get the less character/quirks/faults they have. But for me as a daily driver the 997 didn't really grab me. My wife felt exactly the same too, weird.

This car has a -10mm sports chassis, turbo wheels etc, apart from that bog std manual with a few options like litronics etc. I'm having a PSE fitted as I think this is an essential item. So should pick it up end of the week, can't wait!!

That's true. I couldn't see the the value in the price difference outside of aesthetics and I actually preferred the way the 996 drove so I guess I win on all accounts. I'm sure I'm in the minority about the 996/997 thing but I'm happy so WTF eh? Actually the 996 was totally squeak and rattle free too which amazed me on a car with 30k miles and an older design interior.

Oh forgot to mention but the dealer had just spent £3k servicing it, new discs all round etc and every service on the button over 5 years not to mention one owner. Chuffed!

Hiya,

Yeah car is a 3.6. Early facelift I expect.

Just my opinion but I think the 4WD really changes the character of the car. More benign, numb, I guess due to the weight being distributed more evenly. But to me, the rear weight bias is what the 911 is all about, I've got a F348 GT Competizione as well and that is similar to the 911, not quite as much "bobbing" about but the same level of steering feel/traction off the line. The light front end aids the steering feel. But by god you want to try doing a 3 point turn with no PS and 10" rears.

I could have gone for a Turbo, like the look of them but to be honest the wife hates wings/intakes etc and I didn't quite like the way it drove the couple I tried out. Very rapid but a licence loser, I prefer my fun at lower speeds and naturally aspirate. Does that make me a pansy? lol

As for the Cabs, not for me. Just feel very, very poor structually. I've driven 996 and 997 and have to say the 997 is much, much better cab wise but still doesn't feel like a coupe.

My GTC is non-power steering and I think the thing I liked most about the 996 was the assisted, yet still tactile/communicative feel from the steering. The assistance feels spot on. I didn't quite get the same feel in the C2, it felt more even footed, bit more grunt off the line, and yes, more dead in the helm - well more modern? Just evolutionary changes I reckon. I'm positive the 997 is the better car but it didn't float my boat so to speak. Looks wise it's no contest that's for sure. The thing about the 997, it didn't make me think wow, I really must have this, so I think that's why I went for the 996. 996-997 is not like the difference say between an M3 and an M3 CSL, the difference there is massive.

Hi mate,

Yeah, I'm a bit shocked I liked the car so much, seems the 996 C2 is just the right one for me. Having driven almost all the other models except GT2 glad I finally found the right one!!

That issue with the Fezza has turned out to be a nuked cat in the end, got to get a couple on order now.

Cheers,
LL

You must be joking, I've just managed to sneak the 996 past the wife, a Tubi+DeCat, let's try mid 2007 for that one. lol
