Hi Guys,

Appreiate the info I seek is all out there somewhere in this forum but I have quite specific requirements and i'm in a hurry!
My mate is 40 next week and his wife had planned to get him a nice watch. She has just txt me tonight to say he has mentioned he would like a nice classic 911 and can I help her find a good one sharpish!!

She has a budget circa £15k so being a Porsche virgin (long term P'her & driven a few but never owned) I am asking for advice on what is going to be the best bet? 1999/2000 cars seem to be ridiculously cheap so there is obviously a reason for that. Was thinking maybe 1980's vintage but he's not particularly practical so would like one that just starts, runs and doesn't need too much work to keep it like that!
Any suggestion or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

BB

Thanks for the advice so far, and hey what would PH be without a little difference of opinion?

My mate isn't a petrolhead, he wouldn't really see the enjoyment of trailing round the country looking for the right car, whereas I really love the search. His wife is basically taking the hassle out of finding the car for him I suppose.

Found plenty of lovely looking motors around that money, I agree it IS a risk however you can spend 6 months looking for the right car and still end up being on first name terms with the AA guys!

I think i'll get a short list together from the 15 or so i've got at the moment and then go and see 4 or 5 in the next week and see what I think. Usually quite a good judge of both car and seller!

What about this little puppy?

It is a surprise birthday present for occasional use. The chap just likes classic 911's. Even if the car didn't meet his exact dream spec, it will presumably still satisy the childhood dream to own a 911. If he decides he doesn't want to keep it after say 6 months, it is unlikely it will lose very much money, and certainly not an amount that is likely to trouble the OP's friend (what I mean is, I doubt they are on the breadline if they have £15k to spend on a birthday gift. Yes, I've made an assumption here, but statistcally, it's probably a reasonable one to make. As a statistician, I'm hoping you can appreciate this)
Absolutely bang on on all points. Thank you.

Love smelling that new car smell for my every day car and love that old car smell even more for the weekends!!

Update;

Having now discovered the "kidney bowl issue" is this something only SC and earlier or do 964s suffer too? I know they changed the design of the kidney bowl in '85 but i;m just making sure....

Sorry, lost my concentration there for a minute.....

I've asked Phil Raby to have a look at one on the south coast for me and i'm going to see a couple more local.

Nervous excitement!

Quick update for everyone following your friendly and helpful advice....

Delivered a stunning 1984 Carrera Sport Cab to my mate this morning, just as it was coming light his Mrs got him out in the driveway and I swung the car in and onto untouched snow (slight oversteer which I wish had been on purpose for effect but was just car meets ice physics) and his face was a picture.

Thanks to all who gave me advice, Allan (Chipchap), John from TheCarConsultancy and Paul French who has been honest (I think!) and helpful!

Here she is and she is LOVELY in every way!

I recorded a CD with a load of tracks from 1984 and when that is playing as you drive along, it really does make you feel like you're driving it when it was new! It's like being in Ashes to Ashes!!
