The good news is there is unlikely to be a diesel Cayenne.

Apparently Porsche is talks with Toyota with the view to them adopting the hydrid petrol/electric technology as used in Toyota Prius (2005 europan car of the year).

Is this a good thing from an economy/ecological point of view or is it unthinkable that Porsche should add it's badge to a an SUV running on Toyotas technology?

Why is it a bad thing that a derv powered model won't be available? I know Porsche say it is against their ethos and principles but it would increase sales I think. The 5.0 V10 TT diesel Toureg certainly has a following.

The joint venture with Toyota will dilute the brand and its values more than if they produced an oil burning KN surely? Though some think the brand was diluted by producing an SUV in the first place?

Them building a chelsea tractor is bad enough, though if they were going to do a diesel it would have to be a lot more powerful than the Volkswagen....

How's about a Cayenne Diesel Turbo S then... with more than 1000 bhp, 1500 lb ft of torque and 8 gears. Forget 'diesel economy' and 'green' credentials... this one would get around 10 mpg and need new tyres every month

I actually think this is quite appealing, and I'm not a fan of big 4x4s... they'd have to do something about the face though

Gemballa aren't far off that with the GT750, albeit with a petrol engine.

I cannot imagine how swift a 750hp KN would be.

well for a given BHP, a turbodiesel will have a shedload more torque... it'd need driveshafts like tree trunks

You underestimate the hybrid powerplant from Toyota.

A (less powerful ?) system to be available in the Lexus RX makes the car do the 0-60 in around 7 secs while also returning 35/40mpg.

So its as fast as a V6 (at least) and much more economical.

And its exempt from congestion charging !

I think Porsche know exactly what they are doing. The Lexus is sold out and with a vast waiting list in its core market - the US.

A hybrid Cayenne would keep the sales rolling in , the Porsche balance sheet healthy, and new sportscars under development.

A good idea I think.
