Tuscan won't start...what's your guess?

I've been keeping my Mk. II on a trickle charger for some time - I've taken it out every couple of weeks this summer, but it's been in the garage for the last month while on holiday. Got in it today, pressed the start button - all the normal things happened - dashboard lights, fuel pump etc etc. Alarm is off. Push the button to start - there's a 'clunk' - and all the electrics go off - starter doesn't even try to turn.

What might it be - the starter relay? battery finally expired?
