Hangover gone now, but this is a serious thread. Am thinking either me and hubby going alone, or maybe five or six TIV's if anyone genuinely interested. As said last night, dont know if trip is feasible, but if enough interest we are prepared to do investigative (see told you I am sober) work. My job is in travel so I can look at routes, costs, etc. Hubby into export/import so can suss out freight. We are thinking 2004 summer so plenty of time to arrange. Just think would be great. Anyone keen should have wicked sense of humour and pref mechanical skills

I bet you could fly the b***y thing thre if you had a US Airforce contact, I know that their cars end up doing more air miles than land miles!!!
uuum!
Thanks for that. Seems this could be right up your boulevard!???
Well Apache, it's 2 of us so far - let's get some answers from your contact and see how prices look. We know that generally hols to US i.e. flts & htls not expensive, neither spending money there, so really the big cost is carrying the TIV's - or not depending on what we can find out. Watch this space. Anyone else seriously interested, pls drop a reply or email me. It'll be the best vacation (woops - even learning the American lingo!).
.Sorry, almost forgot, V8tvr also up for it so that makes 3, any more?

Good to see there is so much genuine interest in this. Tony (other half)back in office tomorrow so will start talking to some of his many shipping contacts. Will post when we have some definite concrete costings. Anyone any idea on numbers as I've lost the plot a bit? Maybe chance of discounted rates on insurance etc for multi booking
Tony's initial toe in the water findings. Spoke to a Company which specialises in auto shipping to the Staes. They recommend West Coast, Oxnard 60 miles north of LAX Port Huenene. Ship every 10 days, 26 day transit. They sepcialise in Mercs & Audi's ect.
Now worst bit: prices. Based on this years ratesthe transit cost would be £745 ew plus US handling fee dockside of US$85 per car.
Ins:- Tony would recommend hunting around as for normal marine ins all risks incl scratches etc, he has been qtd 1.5% (i.e. car value). As cars in US for less than 6mths they would classed as tourist, so no additional costs and no emmission -noise probs. Cars would have to be in S'hampton 8-9 days prior to sailing. Although vessel would be a RORO, there are NO vehicles on deck. This Company specialises in auto transit so assured us all would be ok.
Does sound expensive, but this is just a prelim. enquiry - may be able to do better.
As this could be a big event I am sure some of us could maybe raise sponsership or thru the TVRCC mtgs hold fund raising events. Remember we would be promoting the marque and England. The yanks love us at moment so we will try and do some networking with contacts in the States. Anyone who knows any US Companies etc - get working on them, think of the Kudos for them to sponser 'outrageous English cars'.
As it was my orig idea and thread, I am going to be cheeky and take the liberty of naming this event 'Operation American Thunder'. Keep your ideas and suggestions coming and lets make it a reality. p.s. would be good to see a variety of TIV's represented.
Gentlemen and ladies start yor engines - yeeeee haaaa!! pps. wonder if Blackpool might be persuaded to dip into their pockets hmmmm.
Anyone interested get working!!! Without wanting to sound heavy handed, please only post if you're genuinely keen. Don't want to make provision for 10 if 5 drop out. email direct if you like. New thread statinbg on general TVR gassing called Operation American Thunder.
