Friday 30th October quote
Looking like the overheating of a few months ago when the fan fuses blew after going through some deep water has finally taken its toll, there is a lot of smoke on start up, white smoke from one exhaust and using a lot of coolant so seems the head gasket has blown.

Engine has done 50k now, with a awful lot of abuse which is miles more than my rover V8 car ever did (3 engines rebuilds in 4 years) so thinking maybe time to refresh it and consider the options.

Need to finish off fitting the turbo and 6 speed box to the MX5 then I can start work pulling the engine out I guess.

the symptoms could also be worn valve guides.

very unlikely the smoke is rather large amounts and only happen when just turned off and restarted, if left for a while doesn't smoke so would suggest its taking in water when the system is pressurised, valve guides would be blue smoke and worse the longer you leave the car (there was a little of this before this issue so they will be replaced anyway)

Flintstone's just had his Tuscan worked over completely. Bored out to 4.3 and posted a healthy 400bhp on Charlie's rollers the other weekend. You probably all already know who it was that did the work but the name escapes me now. It's warranted for 5 years as well, which was a major selling point. It's going for a final remap now it's run in, and the final figure's expected to be c.420bhp. Goes like bloody stink. Shall I ask him who it was that did the work for you?

It's probably a TVR Power engine, they seem popular for the 4.3 mod, but with a 8k price tag might be a little bit high, seriously considering buying standard parts and doing the rebuild myself.

The standard rebuild at power is £5k and comes with a 3yr warranty. My Power engine is much better than the original and pushes 340 at the wheels which is a good 400 at the fly.

Paul - speak to Jason Clegg at STR8 Six, he is a top bloke and you will probably find him cheaper than Power.

I spoke to him yesterday, it one of the options I'm considering, still thinking to do the build myself.

TVR Power are cheaper than Str8 Six for rebuilds.

I think jason does a bit more for the extra cash though, not sure what exactly.

Do your own rebuild if you can, but be aware that if you planned to sell the car in a years time for example any potential new buyer would prob want a rebuild from a reputable company.

If you keeping it then DIY it.

Your right, Jason does do extra for the cash. The specs of a Str8 six rebuild are difficult to pin down because Jason will give you a very open and honest feedback on your engine and condition, and will make recommendations on his experience on what you should be changing. Also, im not sure the components used between the two builders are the same.

Its the only reason i can think of that Sr8 Six dont publish a standard price - because there is very rarely a standard workscope. Im sure TVR power must do the same on top of their standard prices?

Not completely sure how spec for spec the prices would compare...i dont think they would be vastly different...

Just my opinion, but having seen what goes into a str8 six rebuild...i wouldnt buy a car that hadnt been built by a reputable builder.

i agree, i didnt mean my post to sound negative about str8 six, we all know how good jason is.

I think TVR Powers prices are subject to a good useable exchange block, and costs would obviously increase if there were extra parts required.

I personally would use TVR power for the warranty. not sure what warranty jason gives on his rebuilds, saying that i dont think either would ever need a warranty claim.

Riddle mcfiddle , it would be interesting to see what your outcome is with speed six rebuild if you decide to do it yourself and how long it lasts ?

I don't see a issue with a DIY rebuild, I've spoken to Dom at TVR power who was very helpful, I'm going to pull the engine out myself either way, will then decide what I'm going to do with it, could be tempted to go 4.3 at the moment but doing it as DIY won't save a huge amount and the extra might be worth it just for the warranty.
