...to put the decats in. Any suggestions?! Tried jacking up the front both sides, can get to the cats and have taken off the front undertray but then struggle to get to the back to get the rear tray off! Grr. My ramps are too steep for the front of the car (which i found out the hard way...was rushing and had gone up backwards first then realised the cats were so far forward i had to go up forward, without thinking i tried to go up and i have a couple of nice scratches on the underside now ...stupid me), though the car will go up them in reverse. Dont particularly want to pay someone to fit them it looks to be a simple enough job but i dont have a lift or pit...and im a bit stuck! Is it safe to put the rear on the ramps and then jack the front? (obviously i wouldnt work under a jack i have axle stands) Not something i have ever done cause always worried about not jacking the car from parallel with the floor...

Can you jack the front up and slip the ramps under the wheels? you could then jack the rear and use the stands.
Or just jack up front and back on the passenger side as high as possible as you only need access fromt that side anyway.
Other wise back up on to the ramps and start jacking the front, just go steady and watch the ramps remain stable.

Using a combination of jacks (scissor/trolley/bottle), a few bricks, and 4 axle stands, I can eventually get my car up to the top hole on my axle stands. This is enough to do most jobs, even the clutch! It's a footery,time-consuming pain in the arse job just getting the car up gradually to this height, but it gives reasonable working room for most jobs.
Oh, for a pit or ramps sometimes though...

i did the job about 3 weeks ago but did it differently i jacked and ramped (axel stands) the car on only the right side (front and back) started with the backside (mostly the higher part so easy to get your jack under the car) that worked fine for me and it's safer no need to put the car up on all fours be sure to disconnect the exhaust's backside's first and take both bottom plates off it's not a nice but a straight forward yob rens

My ramps are too steep, but use a block of wood about 18" long to drive onto which i rest about halfway up the ramp, clears ok even with the front splitter, I then ratchet strap the wheel to the ramp so it can't roll off, then jack the back of the car up, try putting a couple of old wheels under the back wheels for extra security if you like too. I have done this a number of time, got the gearbox out like this easy enough.

Don't ever use bricks to support the car, they're not safe when point loads are applied and can collapse. Blocks of wood are fine. If the OP want to get the car up a foot or so I'd suggest driving onto wooden boards if necessary to get it high enough to get a jack in, then jack each end up and drop it onto axle stands. If you're using a trolley jack and orient it so the wheels are parallel to the centerline of the vehicle there's no problem jacking up cars at an angle. Do make sure the car is on level ground though and chocked so it can't move.

Rob i would suggest you jack the front & then slip the ramps under just watch the under tray it is heavier than it looks & has bloody sharp edges sliced my hand but was easy for me have a 4 post lift Ian

Job done. Took about 1/2 day all in all, over about 3 stints between dog waking and chores!
I just jacked up the one side bit by bit with block of wood. Going to invest in some better jacks i think and extend my current ramps.
Was pleased when i got under that the chassis is in great shape! Diff is very rusty on casing though...may need attention soon enough.
Test drive this afternoon (staying under 3000rpm as i am still running her in!) and sounds nice. Much deeper bass and two cannons attached to the back of the car that go off randomly!!
I do now feel like a complete hooligan, got some smiles and some scowls!!
Looking forward to opening her up!
edited to say the torsion bar was a git. I took the undertray off whilst the car had both front hweels off the ground. It slipped out of chassis, then when putting car back together with one spring now compressed and other extended....god was it a git to get back in!! Managed to jack up other side a little and lower the other enough to get in back in but it made me bloody swear...
