People have done it with the engine in the car but all the specialists I have talked to take the engine out (dont think they would do that for a laugh). I have been quoted 20 hours labour to remove a Speed Six engine and put it back in. That is from a specialist who has removed a fair few of them so I would guess it might take longer for a first timer. Taking the actual head off shouldnt take that long at all. Obviously the HG and timing afterwards will be where most of the time is spent.

The work will be alot easier with the engine out, and it isnt hard to remove.
If your rebuilding your head MAKE SURE your mechanic fits a new half time bearing.
If he doesnt, then it'll probably die shortly after refitting.
