Just read a decent article on the biggest car manufacturer losses with the Bugatti Veyron estimated to lose 3.9m PER CAR http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/290953/true_cost...

Some other interesting loss making models listed as well ...

Bugatti don't 'lose' money because the whole project was paid for in cash out of VAG's enormous profit pot. The impression articles like that give is that the rest of the group is suffering through a loss leader but this couldn't be further from the truth. Grouping it in with the Fiat Stilo and Jaguar X-Type is laughable rubbish.

I would think VW put a lot of other loses or R&D costs from other departments in with the Veyron figures to be a bit creative with the accounting.

How did peugeot manage to lose £13k per every 1007 sold? They didn't even cost that when new! It's no surprise the Renault Vel Satis lost a lot of money, I only ever saw one on the roads and had to stop and double take it looked such a disgrace.

Surely it's down to volume of sales.

Peugeot wouldn't lose £13k per 1007 if they sold 2, 3, 4 times as many. If they lost £13k no matter how many they sold, then they'd have a problem! biggrin

The Veyron (and to an extent, so was the Phaeton) was always a technical exercise (some will filter to other models etc., Phaeton to the Bentleys) and accepted very early on that it wasn't going to make money.

How could Jag lose so much on the X-type? Was it not just a Mondeo underneath (correct me if I'm wrong!) So surely that'd significantly reduce the R&D and tooling costs?

I guess a lot of it comes down to branding, new mentions and PR. Even though they make a loss on the project directly the amount of coverage they get would counteract this.

Still a lot of money to spew down the drain!

I suspect they made their millions in chocolate oranges.

Do you know something that I don't Mr Terry ?

However.... If I made my Millions from selling pink fluffy slippers, does't mean I would buy a Pink car with white lambswool interior does it?

Can we trust the complex accounting that these large multinationals must employ?
It's rather like Starbucks losing £7 on every coffee sold in the UK if you catch my drift.

My sister's just sent over some photos of her sitting in an identical car in Dubai yesterday. There can't be that many in that horrible colour combination withe the black wheels and as a super sport...can there?

The X type was always thought of as just a Mondeo in drag, but in fact is quite different. Yes, the rear suspension is basically Mondeo estate, but the front is totally different. The floor pan itself is highly modified for Jaguar use with a transmission tunnel to allow for a prop shaft to the rear on the 2.5 and 3.0 models. Ever seen a RWD Mondeo? In fact the S Type had more Ford in it ( Ford Lincon) than the X Type did

they veyron is a hero car, the amount of free PR it got in mags, TV, and the web more than covers the losses VAG made from its production and is certainly a fraction of what it would have cost to place adverts for the same amount of coverage

the phaeton is best forgotten wink
