Yes, very ironic isn't it?
I have my own successful business in the car trade and whilst I don't want to pigeon hole people, it seems that some just can't help but not see the bigger picture... I can see both sides of the argument for horses on/not on the roads but as Vipers said, the initial post wasn't about that - it was about the appalling attitude of a driver towards a horse.

Bottom line. Roads are not for the use of the chosen few, they are there to be used by all those legally allowed to use them.
Drivers need to chill out, observe, anticipate, react and adjust to the road conditions, not blindly push on without a regard to other road users.
This very much, the mentality of nothing must slow me down needs to stop. Drivers need to chill out, observe, anticipate, react and adjust to the road conditions, not blindly push on without a regard to other road users.

Oh no doubt the driver in the link is at fault. Choosing to ride a horse down a busy A/B road is equally stupid though.
This! We no longer live in 1890 and horses shouldn't be on roads anymore. Then again I don't think cyclists should be either.Vipers said:

It is illegal to let your horse poo in the road and leave it there:
Highways Act 1980 Section 148 (c)
148 Penalty for depositing things or pitching booths etc. on highway.
If, without lawful authority or excuse—
(a)a person deposits on a made-up carriageway any dung, compost or other material for dressing land, or any rubbish, or
(b)a person deposits on any highway that consists of or comprises a made-up carriageway any dung, compost or other material for dressing land, or any rubbish, within 15 feet from the centre of that carriageway, or
(c)a person deposits any thing whatsoever on a highway to the interruption of any user of the highway, or
(d)a hawker or other itinerant trader pitches a booth, stall or stand, or encamps, on a highway.
he is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.
I used to live next door to a racing stables in the Leicestershire Wolds and every morning at sparrows fart they would be using my drive as a walking area to warm the horses up before they started on the gallops. Highways Act 1980 Section 148 (c)

It was a nice way to wake up and there were never any problems. However the blue bottles in the summer were the size of flying pigs but I digress...
I now live near a sort of livery yard where all makes, sizes, pedigrees etc of horses and ponies are stabled and all of them without exception take a dump outside my house.
I live on an estate which is used by the horsey set to clop along to exercise their nags and I'm the penultimate house on the way back to the stables.
Its as if the horses think "time for the dump before the stables" and have a quick evacuation before getting onto the drive into the stable yard.
I have now printed out the notice above and will be bringing it to the attention of the riders as they bring their st machines onto my frontage.
This is why I have lost all compassion for the horse....
Cheers,
Tony
I drive on a public highway - My vehicle is both taxed and insured, and it is registered so that it can be traced.
Im sorry but I do not think a road is the place for a horse. Ive seen riders on horses two abreast on a busy A road and that just smacks of making a point. Horses have no place on todays road. And should not be on the road.
If they bolt how do you control them ?
As for those that insist and try to make a point by riding - they need to get a life. keep your animal to paths that are not a road. Use your horsebox to move them. If not then get insurance and tax and all that if you want to be a road user.

well put. horse riding on roads too hazards these days. they slow traffic, make you go wide to pass, unpredictable. i can see the need for police to use for crowd control when vehicles can't be used. Sort of disagree and agree. A 60 mph road is a transport link and no place for a horse, whereas a 30 mph road is by default a multi user road, ie pedestrians, cyclists, cars and horses. I would not allow horses on any road with a limit above 30.Im sorry but I do not think a road is the place for a horse. I've seen a terrified teenage girl as her horse went mental kicking stopped cars at a busy junction.
Horses are animals that demand respect. They are unpredictable and dangerous.
Riding on the road is asking for trouble, even if it isn't your fault your more likely to come off worst.
They are dangerous enough in a field let alone around traffic, and with the poor standard of drivers on the road today.
Best of luck
