Central London was brought to a standstill in the rush hour today when 800 sets of traffic lights failed at the same time - in effect locking signals on red.

Thousands of drivers were trapped between the north and south circulars as vast tailbacks grew. Tempers frayed with most major routes across central London impassable.

The worst gridlock the capital has seen for years was caused by a computer which crashed as engineers installed software designed to give pedestrians longer to cross the roads.

Cherie Blair was among those caught in the chaos as drivers were forced to switch off their engines and wait. Many abandoned cars to sit by the roadside as the chaos caused by the traffic light failure was made worse by the largest programme of roadworks the capital has ever seen.
I'm still puzzling as to how one would differentiate this from any other day in central Londinium...

Was it a failure, or a further underhand Kennism?

And looking further into the article:
quote:
A TfL spokesman admitted that the crash was caused when engineers attempted to install a new computer "model" - complex software linked to controversial plans aimed at re-phasing traffic lights to give pedestrians more precedence over motorists.

They said the computer unexpectedly "choked" on the new software.
Anyone got that fag packet with the rollback procedure on it????

Why are public & infrastructure computer systems *never* managed properly...? In the private sector, resignations would have hit desks by lunchtime for a fcuk up of this magnitude.

Because as we all know from the Delorean scandal, the UK government are that money tree your parents told you about.

Why did an upgrade to the PNC cost over £100 million and would have cost more to actually hit specification? Surely the fact that the government has a military should make potential systems suppliers manage their projects well.

Cos they pay peanuts.

Still, those pedestrians have all the time in the world to cross the road now!

As long as such muppets are in control of these systems Consulting has a future! Not that they never make mistakes, but at least you can fire them and appoint someone else... and the muppets stay in place, or are even promoted! As we all know the best way to get rid of someone in the public services is to give him a promotion.

Yours

Don't listen to them, it's all a cover up. The crashes have been caused by Benny Hill changing the computer tape.

I think it is true that you never hear about those systems that perform well.

PS Wasn't it a Private Sector consultancy that caused the problem?

Big fat hairy deal. Oh no! not the PM's wife! She's a mother too, don't you know! Jeez, who writes this drivel?

Traffic lights? oh yeah, cock-up... whooops.

Trouble in London again eh!

Never mind guys the rest of us are fine

But I'm sure there will now be a 10bn consultancy and investment program to help the capital keep moving and encourage more people to charge.

About time for the compensation culture to rear it's head.

We need some decent ambulance chasing American style Lawyers.

A class action along the lines of The City of London being sued for obstructing your journey to work, with things like phased traffic lights and the plethora of dangerous road furniture and needless road narrowing.
