Ecclestone Auctions Off Private Car Collection

We're not sure why. It's not as if he's skint...

Ford Anglia. Sweet, but it's no Gullwing...
Ford Anglia. Sweet, but it's no Gullwing...
F1 overlord and master, Bernie Ecclestone, is selling 50 of the rarest cars in the world from his private car collection.

The expansive selection includes a 1964 Ford Anglia, a 1955 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster worth £3.25million.

A spokesman for RM Auctions, which is handling the sales taking place in October commented: “The collection, built up over decades of careful acquisition, is composed of a variety if automobiles that represent many marques and eras. This auction marks what will

be the first and only public exhibition of the Ecclestone Collection.”

Pundits have been curious of the sale, which is expected to make at least £15million, since he hardly needs to expand on his £3billion fortune.

Bernie’s biographer, Terry Lovell, revealed: “He is 77 in October and perhaps he believes it’s time to tidy up some of his private assets.”

The 540K Special Roadster. It's worth about £3.25million now.

Although I love my classic & vintage cars 3.25 million for one, no matter how tidy it is I'd rather have a lot of classics for 3.25 million than just one but I suppose if money's no object. Would someone care to post up the full list for those of us that are supposed to be working. cheers.

Annoys me that they are described as 'assets'. Surely despite his obvious wealth he must have some love of the cars?

According to the RM press release, he needs to sell these off to make room for more front-engine F1 cars in his collection.

As do we all.

"The SSK Roadster. It's worth about £3.25million now"

That`s not an SSK, it`s the 540K Special Roadster. I`ve always thought of these as horribly bloated, early eurotrash wheels. THe SSk is much much nicer (and arguably worth the money).

I`d heard that Bernie is now concentrating on the racing cars in his collection (of which he has quite a few!)

You're right! Sorry all...

Fixed! There is also an SSK in the auction - probably why I got confuzzled!

Am I the only person that finds it really sad that this man has access to such a wonderful collection of cars and does not share it with the public? There are some stunning cars which really should be on loan to public displays, or even set up as part of an Eclestone museum. It is the same as art collectors buying works of art and keeping them hidden away in private collections - just rather sad and selfish!
