Caterham Wins 0-100-0

Enzo comes a close second in the maddest dash of them all

Caterham's R500 Evolution took the crown at Autocar's recent 0-100-0 test.

The competition which took place at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire saw the Caterham sprint to 100mph and then brake to a halt in just 10.73 seconds. This beat last year's best time set by the road going GT car, the Mosler MT900S.

Autocar's timing shows that the R500 reached 30mph in 1.45 seconds, 60mph in 3.21 seconds and 100mph in 6.92 seconds. Stopping from 100mph took just 3.6 seconds!

Almost as impressive was the sizeable Ferrari Enzo. It may cost £425,000 compared to the £42,000 for the Caterham, but the full sized supercar achieved 0-100-0 in just 10.98 seconds.

For comparison, a Suzuki GSX-R also took part, reaching 100mph in 5.03 seconds but braking to a halt extended the time to 10.89.

So the Caterham, Enzo and Suzuki all broke the previous record?

10.73s wow, wasn't it 11.44s before?!

Sam

edited to say, 11.44 was from before the Mosler did it... what did that get?

10.98secs, although the Yanks didn't seem to include a reaction/transition time in that figure.

FAO Stuart: Great article as per usual but can you answer a few questions?

The images of the supercars (Enzo, CGT, SLR) seem to be photoshopped, were these actually at the event or were they tested on another date or venue?

And I see from the article that the Zonda (blue model) & Murcielago were present but their old figures were published (from 2 years ago), were they not tested?

Cheers!

Oh and congrats on the new record!

They were tested at another venue, yes. Everything else was there.

On the Zonda, yes we've re-used the old figures. The car hasn't changed since we took the original figures, so we see no reason to re-figure the car (After all, the oft' quoted Mclaren F1 figures were taken 10 years ago). Besides, Pagani simply don't have an army of press cars available for us to test in the way that some manufacturers do - it is VERY hard on the car after all. We like to show a bit of mechanical sympahy from time to time where appropriate...

I thought that'd be the explanation behind the figures, thanks for the info Stuart.

That little "Zoom...Screech" competition is always the one I look forward to the most... I don't give a damn how irrelevant it is!!

Stuart... you omitted to point out the 0-100-0 teaser videos on the website.

Is there anywhere I can download them, my computer is to darned slow to stream them? Looked great fun though...

Was there any street legal drag machinery at this one? Recall John Hales' Chevy Street Eliminator monster being at the last event. Fearsome bit of kit.

Not this time. Last time the theme was "street legal" so we tried to get some weird stuff which could be driven to the event (well, technically anyway). This time it was more about getting as many cars as possible, but we've got some more mental stuff: bike engined smarts and suchlike.

100-0 in 3.5 seconds is insane braking was that on road tyres? the GSXR's 100-0 time seemed abit on the slow side they are normaly 4ish seconds

The tests are always done on road tyres in this case it looks like they used Avon CR500s which are standard fit.

The GSXR1000 thing is easily explained I believe. It is unlikely to be down to rider error as the rider was John Reynolds the rider leading the BSB series. The bike was in Rizla Suzuki colours as well so might well have been the Crescent special that was in Evo.

Put simply the other times you have seen from mags are done by getting the bike up to 110 mph and then stopping. This eradicates reaction time and the fractions taken for full brake pressure to be achieved and takes out the transition from accelerating to braking that bikes suffer badly from. Autocar said many mags so a 0-100 then a 100-0 with no transition and get a quicker time. These tests are all done in one go and include the reaction times.

Obviously all the vehicles differ only on the acceleration portion of the test, as it is widely known that provided the riders/drivers can press hard enough all the brakes will perform equally.
