Its gonna add a bit to the bill, but I also know I've a better chance of surviving, even a moderate bump, intact.

With welding like that, I think you'd be lucky to survive a speed bump!!!

The really scary thing is that this was done, not by some unknown backstreet bodger, but by a well known and frequently recommended TVR "specialist" indie.

Knowing the previous owner and where he had the outriggers replaced, before I did my body off restoration I approached them to give me a quote for an outrigger replacement. They intended to charge me £1800 + VAT.

Having seen in person what an appalling and unsafe mess they made of the job, I am exceedingly thankful that I decided to do it myself!!!!

I guess some garages use 'mechanics' to do this welding as opposed to using experienced welders?
I bet it was sold as a fantastic bit of welding and we are doing a great job.

in steves case its not so much the welding, (although can be a big factor in metal repairs, lack of penetration, undercutting, slag inclusion etc) but the notching of the pipe doesn't even connect with the intersecting pipe for the weld to go around it.

I know who done the work via facebook, and shocking really.

Yup, the only thing obvious from underneath was that they looked to have used a similar powder coating standard to the original chassis. Something I wasn't particularly happy with at that alone. furious

They were done at great expense and by somewhere that knew the usage our car had/ the concerns we had with the old outriggers not being strong. I certainly feel they would not have proven well in a race incident structurally. At all. furious

Read into that what you will.

Steve and a few others on this thread know my thoughts on the specialist in question after spotting a few bodges they had made at the end of our ownership. I am extremely disappointed that Steve has uncovered much worse still. frown

On the plus side, Peter, Paul, APM and Steve will have this better than factory shortly, by a long way. I look forward to seeing it progress, hopefully I can have a helping hand somewhere down the line! smile

So the garage actually went to the effort of bodging the car rather than explaining it wasn't repairable. Sounds to me like the standard poor mgmt approach by said garage happened ie wasted time by a mechanic whilst garage owner off away, garage owner returns and decides he can't tell the customer that they can't fix it as they have wasted time (money) on it. So he gets his unskilled mechanic to carry on, bodge it right and proper and then stand in front of the owner and say what a great job theyve done. probably even saying we won't charge you the time it took us only the time we quoted etc ie we are doing you a favour. No wonder the garage closed down and is now pretty much dead! W@nkers.
