The rebuild begins......again.
Discussion
Well with the very kind assistance of D14AYS (Dean) and Ridds (Matt) plus of course plasticman we got a hell of a lot done! In summary the body was lifted, initially with the engine crane and with the reasurance of Dean we hung the body from the roof of the garage.
A few things I learnt along the way were....
Make sure you take the handbrake off its mounts otherwise it will tear through the fibreglass when you jack the body up!
Make sure you empty the gearbox oil before you pull the prop shaft off!
The actual removal of the body and chassis was not that a slow job, the bit the takes the time is all the prep before like taking the interior out and removing all the body bolts.
We were originally going to pull the chassis out with the engine in situ but we decided to lift it out first. We had the luxury of being able to cut away the front of the chassis to help get it out!
When we took the engine out we discovered that my car as previously suspected, is a GT model. This explains the slightly different shock mounts. It may also mean that that the eninge internals are slightly different.
We put a piece of 2x4 into the boot and used this as a beam to lift the back of the body with the engine crane.
We then strapped the car to the roof with large ratchet straps
Plasticman and Ridds pulling the old chassis out
The diff removed and sort of cleaned
New chassis slide under the body and then the body was lowered.
This was all done on Tuesday. I will take some pictures of the work that was done yesturday.
I must say a sincere thanks to Dean, Matt and Dave it would not have been possible to do it in the time we did without their help!

I know the back of the body is the heaviest. The way you pulled it up, doesn't damage the body or cause cracks (interior was still in the car?)?? Good solution!
The back of the body seemed fine, it was plsticman's clever idea to lift it up like that. The interior was not in the car everything but the carpets had coem out.Hi Steve,
The chassis that I have put on is off a 2002 car. This does not allow for the extension brackets to be fitted. The mounts on the new chassis pertrude 7 inches from the top chassis rail compared to the 5 on the old one. This will mean the shocks will sit more upright on the new chassis. The extensions that I had on the old chassis moved the shock mount an extra inch out giving roughly 6 inches from the top chassis rail if that makes sense?
Thanks for the kind offer of help, but tomorrow I have a young persons advanced driving course all day so working on the car will have to be left until sunday. The main jobs that I have to do before fibreglass are;
Bolting body down
wiring engine back up
plumbing oil pipes back in
putting fuel tank back
replacing parts of the interior
These are the main jobs I can think of but I am sure there are others!
There is not anything I need help with as such but you are more than welcome to pop round for a nosey on Sunday if you want. PM me if you do.

Thanks for popping round steve! Yes it was great to hear an AJP again!
Glad I motivated you to tackle yours!
I have ordered a full set of carpets from D&C and I am going to send bits of the interior off to them so they can retrim them in alcantara. Steve has a really nice alcantara upper dash and I am going to get mine done like that.

Glad to hear it's running again Mark.
I though the other night did you and Dave have any grief putting the engine back in with the front cross-member back in place?
I meant it was nice to hear Steve's lol! Mine is not running yet. I though the other night did you and Dave have any grief putting the engine back in with the front cross-member back in place?
Yes it was a royal pain trying to get the engine back in! The non standard manifolds did not help matters.
Had the day off yesturday and my dad kindly trailed it up to Plasticman's.
I have the new set of wheels back, I have gone for a dark metalic anthracite. I don't have all of them on the car as yet as I don't want them damaged/marked.
You can't really see the metalic in this picture - must get a decent camera!!

How it happened is explained here...

Yes that tyre is from the other side. The original wheel was smashed so I put the old wheel from the other side on there rather than the new one so the new one doesn't get damaged during the repairs.

As most of you know I was debating what headlamps to fit and mike (itsallyellow) posted up a pic of a cerb race car with light covers on. I knew that was what I wanted straight away and plasticman has gone about making it happen!
I was going wait until it was all finished but I think they look so good even in their half finished state I thought it was worth posting a pic.
The lens covers look darker than they actually are and the gaps around the old headlamp covers will be filled so it will be seamless. The headlamps that I am using are sealed units off a Tamora.
These with the dark wheels should look pretty cool!

Its good to stand out from the crowd, bet you cannot wait to get it back.
Yeah it has been a long time! The new interior will be arriving this week (again, this is a little different from standard) and hopefully it will go off to paint early next week. So just in time for the winter Gassing Station | Cerbera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
