4.2 - 4.5 Much difference?
Discussion
Sorry Chaps, this may be a numpty question but I need some advice.
I am ready to buy my first Tiv
. I'm going straight for the kill and looking for a Cerb.
I had convinced myself that I wanted a 4.5, don't know why, just for the badge I spose???
The thing is, most of the ones i've seen in the classifieds that I like, right price, colour etc seem to be 4.2s.
I've been told that servicing costs are about the same so thats not the issue, so am I just being a tit wanting the
Daddy?
Why did you chose what you have?
Cheers

If I was to go and buy another Cerb, it would either be a well sorted 99/00 4.2 with new lights and spiders or go the whole hog and buy a 4.5 RR (get the factory to Dyno it first) with a CRG & Nitrons too.
I would not pay more for a standard 4.5 when there isn't much noticeable performance difference over a standard 4.2.

people who have 4.2s will say theirs are better, and that there is no difference in performance.
people who own 4.5s will say that theirs are superior, and why have second best.
I don't know the truth, but I do know I own a 4.5 !
I have to admit that it's spent over a week waiting for a new clutch slave cylinder....)

Trooper,
I see you have a fairly early one.
Has it been fairly well behaved since you have owned it?
Heh! Yes and no...
It needed a fair amount of work when I first bought it to get it up to scratch, and the first couple of months I used up my RAC callout quota for the year.
Since then it's been pretty solid, I've done almost 8000 miles in 6 months and if we forget the first few hiccups, it's only needed jumping a couple of times and the exhaust is blowing at the moment, but other than that it's sound as a pound.
Bottom line... a few little extras on the 4.5 make it a top-of-the-line cerbera, but....
on performance side,
the 4.2 responds quicker, the engine sounds a little louder.... more music....
but the 4.5 does excel when you shift one the way its supposed to be shifted.... someone who knows how to drive these babies on the limits of revs... will pull around 1-2 second better times on a sorted 4.5 than a sorted 4.2....
If you're after the best, I'd recommend a 4.5 anyday, but if you're after a TVR Cerbera... the 4.2 is a cracking bargain and the spare cash left over can be used to upgrade the wheels and maybe even switch the badge on the rear if it takes your fancy

If you have seen some cracking 4.2, then go for one. The 4.5's very rarely gives out the claimed 420bhp, and the cars vary quite a lot. The 4.2's are more consistant from car to car with regards to the 360bhp quoted. Most I would guess are around the 340/350 mark.
As I said at the beginning; go for a 4.2 that you are happy with, and money saved can go towards upgrades etc..

Fellas', some good advice thanks
.
I will heed what has been said and go for the best one I can find, condition, as has been said seems to be the thing to watch.
Spiders are top of my list, as is Blue paint
and if it's got LW lights even better. (Watch out DJ, I might bring the money to Le Mans!)
Whatever I get it'll have this on it which was bought for me by my Ho yesterday!

I knew building her a new bedroom had it's upsides!!!!
I'll let you know.

I've had a 4.5 and a 4.2 and can honestly say, you can't tell the difference between them while driving on the road.
The extra power doesn't become noticable until after 140mph, but ask yourself - how many times will you do that sort of speed? Even on a track, you'll be lucky to get a straight long enough.
Your best option is to choose your ideal colour and interior combination, then any optionals like spiders, afterburners etc. then buy the first one that comes along*. If it's a 4.5, then to can brag at the bar about your superior engine. If its a 4.2, then you will still have a cracking car and you'll have paid a couple of grand less.
*buying the first one that comes along, presuming it's been looked after, checked out etc etc.

Well, I'm not sure I'll enjoy hitchhiking back. Especially as we'll have just beat the French at footy
Edited to say: If you want a passenger ride, it'll be in the area for a while (near Heathrow) - no hassle etc!
