Does anyone have one of these 'cut out journals' that I can borrow? TIA

You should find that one of the caps will fit close enough so that there is enough thread and the nuts can be fitted and used to pull it down into position.

Yep, no special tool required.

I can start clamping down one end of the camshaft, but it's the centre where the lobes are pointing down most, so it puts a big strain on things, and that doesn't feel right. I can't clamp the centre because the camshaft is too high so I can't get the bearing cap on. I'll take photos later to illustrate.

I had similar fears when I did the cams last year so I made a bridge piece from angle iron that I bolted diagonally across the centre of the cam (with a wooden lever/pad at the contact point). Then I could gradually pull it down until the caps could take up the load.

Poor photo, but good solution. I didn't realise that cam journals were a standard size, this bearing cap is from a 928, it only needed minor modification and is otherwise a perfect fit.
