Starter gone again

Blown another starter this evening, the third one thats been on the car since I have had it (four months)

This time I am getting a whirring rattling noise like the soloniod is only party engaging but no start.

Is there an answere to this problem?, the first one I had woulndt start when the car was hot, my dealer fitted a new one wich failed before the car was deliverd back and they fitted a third one which has lasted a month.

the cars under warranty, what I really want is an uprated one. What causes the startes to die so quickly?

Dunno, but my ECU has "STARTER FRIENDLY CHIP FITTED" written on the front.

Is that normal?

Interesting, is that in the footwell over above the fuel tank?

I too am in the same situation (3 in last 5 months, car now in garage awaiting fourth). Exactly the same symptoms.

Apparently TVR factory have not been supplying starter motors themselves for about a year now. Those that are in the supply chain are therefore coming from a different source than they used to in the past.

This could be a slightly delicate subject so I'll have to choose my words carefully. It would appear that the solenoids on starters being delivered in the last few months are different from those that used to be supplied. Hence the frequent failures on brand new starters.

In the footwell. But it also has GT written on it too.

GT acording to Mr Melling would indicate you have a steel crank rather than the forged one.
I think that's the right way round.

Has anyone actually got to the root of this problem yet or are we all doing exchange replacements by the dealers?

Has someone actually taken one apart to find out if its solenoid each time and why they go wrong?

If anyones got a dead one in the Brands Hatch area, I am happy to do the diagnostic work.

Don't know anything about the ecu side of things but rover starters are crap unless you use something from the newer range of engines. So fit something from a crossbolted 4.0 or 4,6 and you will notice a big improvement assuming you haven't already got one.

....Cerberas dont use Rover starter motors...or am I missing something here?

There were two types of cranks, the billet ones and the cast ones.

From what I understand, the billet ones are effectively cut from a billet of EN40B (a very strong forged steel). Then nitrided (carbon hardening process).

The cast ones were just that, basic castings, and hardend, weak.

The GT on the ECU's doesnt necessarily signify that the crank is a billet one.

Remember, parts bins, engines being built, and ecu's being thrown in.

We're not talking Porsche quality control here.

The Cerbera starter motor is a racing starter motor. Made by a good company, Tilton.

The only problem is, they chose that motor cos it fits in that tiny hole and can push the few hp required to turn over.

Only problem is, its an area of heat build-up, vibration - plus, the starter-motor is dont really a daily-duty motor, from Tilton SuperStarter specs they do mention it being a light use only starter.

I guess TVR must have been thinking, its not like they'll be starting her more than once a day or week...

I think it is the Nissan. Edited to say....maybe I'm wrong from what Ash is saying.
Leven put my starter motor on and before they fit them they have a stronger solenoid fitted.
Mines not been on that long but OK so far.
