I've had this discussion with a few people.
The decision is like this to create a unique event and its also to do with safety.
By limiting it to the specified cars the convoys and the initial meet up of cars is much more of a spectacle.
The safety aspect is to do with creating an event enviroment whereby small power to weight ratio cars are not tempted to race big power to weight ratio cars. This is because the main element of the event is the drive on the planned route.
By restricting it to the cars specified I am hoping it will attract like minded and mature drivers who won't want to be racing on the public roads and who simply wish to drive on great roads in one of the most scenic areas with the company of other 'cool' cars if I can put it that way.
If the event was open to anybody/car then the usual CHAV element would arrive with their annoying silly happy hardcore dance music, their silly attitude to wanting to race bigger cars.... in general it would compromise the safety of the event.
There are many other events to cater for 'run of the mill' type cars, there are local night time cruises etc. and car show events throughout the year. But in the Lake District I have created a unique event which requires strict rules of attendance.
I hope you can see where I am coming from.
Regards.

I can see where you are coming from, but it just sounds a bit elitist. It's not the cars that are the chav element, its the people - I guess I wouldn't be welcome in my Clio...
A good example of an inclusive event was the last Nothants run which I was on - huge range of cars from Lambo, Ferrari and Vipers to me in the Clio, Mk1 MR2's etc. We all went out for a great drive and no-one acted like a cock. The main reason for this (in my opinion) was that it was orgainised through these forums, and this site is generally used by mature adults who can drive appropiately for given circumstances.
Just my 2p...

I see your point, but don't be fooled into thinking that supercar drivers of different marques won't want to see how their car goes against other types. I'm sure it will be great fun, but I think having a convoy of Ferraris, Porsches, TVRs and Lambos will result in a degree of bravado on the open road. Still, good luck with it!
I appreciate your comments.
As some have pointed out there are many events which cater for other car types. This one is different because it is restricted and all the cars will be of a similar pedigree so to speak, which will add to the atmosphere of the event.
But I do still think that by doing it this way it will be safer, if I were to look at the alternative where by it was open to anybody I know for a fact there will be loads of CHAVs and young drivers in 1L Corsas and so on turning up and their whole point of being there would be to see how their car would perform against the bigger cars.
But as has also been pointed out this could happen with the bigger cars themselves... but I'm inclined to think that if you own a big bhp/weight ratio car then you are old enough to recognise the dangers in racing on the public roads... I can not think in those terms if the event was open to any youngster, or chav that was allowed to attend.
My appologies if you find yourself not able to attend this event due to the car you own.
(maybe buy a proper car and attend next year --- only joking!! ;-) )

I think the chances of me attending whether I have a Clio or Koenigsegg are in the region of slim to none. I certainly won't be losing any sleep over being unable to meet the entry criteria

I was just giving the organiser a bit of feedback on his event, which in my opinion seems pointlessly elitist - I guess I'd prefer to attend things that are open to all such as the Virginia Water meets, Northants Runs or Pistonfest (where incidentally the star of the show for me and a few other was a 53 Chevy pickup)
I'll happily leave the special people to their special cars

eloquently put and I totally agree

i have to agree with egomeister, you say you dont want chav cars there with there small power to weight ratios trying to race higher power to weight cars, i know a few friends that have modified 2l 16 turbo novas and corsa's which have a higher power to weight ratio that my cerb so does that mean they could attend? To me it seems like upper class snobbery, but thats mabye just me
Saying that its your event and therefore you an make whatever rules you like, hope you get a good turn out and all goes well

generally the type of people who 'tune' novas and the like are a wankers though - you must have seen the chavs in their clapped out superminis in car parks?
putting a 2l turbo in a nova doesn't sound very chav to me and as such the person who has done it deserves respect and is likely to not be of the sort of dickhead type who we all surely hate? and therefore I would've thought ought to be welcome to attend - after all, if you can't call a nova with 250bhp a supercar then what can you call it! and it'd surely be funny seeing it out accelerate a 355
